Agree. Still time for Lonie but it's time for Minch to have a proper run.

Why no time in the middle?

Love them both, and Minch went really well today.
Lonie seems to be beginning to try to play the Ballantyne/Milne "pest" role.
Not sure if it suits him though.

Great game, I like most on here would've loved to see him go thru the middle at some stage

Minch is a forward mid, who'll get no centre sq time in the AFL because he has to play his role?!

So we know he won't kick 3 every week, it's hard to get more than 12-15 deep, so as soon as he has a quiet one... knives out.. he's just VFL blah blah blah....

He'll go back to the VFL and play midfield get 30 and kick 2...

Here's a suggestion,

Players can rotate through roles, particularly if they're off a bit...

Minch has played a number of good games in the AFL, not sure why he's even started behind Long and Lonie (Gresh fair enough)

I saw him up back and marking on the wings looks like people only see what they want to see.

Richo said after the game that he has the tank to go through the middle... I'd expect to see it in the coming weeks.

Yes, I thought he was excellent. Contested marks and hardball gets with confidence. Kicked 3 very good goals. A pity he went for a snap for that set shot. That trend is absolute malarkey that old Geelong poseurs are responsible for, e.g. Stevie J. Can't they just go back and have a shot for goal with a drop punt, instead of this running around for a banana/checkside kick garbage? As Tommy Hafey used to say, it's just dumb - dumb football.

I absolutely question why Lonie has been played in front of him so far this year… Minchington's first 20-30 minutes today were far better than anything Lonie has put up in 4 weeks.

The problem is Minch has done this before. He'll play a great game and look AFL level and then the next few games go MIA. Assuming he's in next week he needs to backup with a really strong game. It's easy to get under teams radars as an unknown, but Hawks will see he kicked 3 and do some work on him.

It's also hard for a small fwd to kick 3 every week?

So hard zero small forwards have ever average 3 over a career?

It is probably now the hardest position to consistent get a lot of opportunities

Oh, and you do realise that forwards get up the ground? Sometimes into the back half...

But generally they are still in front of the ball...

Behind the footy, easiest place to get an uncontested kick
At the footy, easiest place to get a lot of the ball, but half will be contested
In front of the ball, you are reliant on how effective your team mates deliver the footy

+1.
He is up and about, and gets to all the right spots, as if he were never out of the seniors.
Lonie seems to want to do the Milney/Daicos freaky high risk stuff.
Meatball has a bit more muscle too, which helps

Small forwards are all about speed and lateral movement

Exciting today. Saints went with undersized forward line which left Cat exposed sure to their height in defense. Mitch was the beneficiary of that today.
Great start. More next week.

He comes in, plays a couple then often seems to get some minor injury, goes out, waits 3 months, gets back in again.

Fingers crossed he can stay 100% fit, because I'd like to see him get 4 or 5 in a row and given a decent burst in the centre as well. He has enough speed to give Jackie Boy some support.

Agree get him rotating through the midfield.
He is a strong kick who could carve the ball on angles through the middle which is exactly what we need.
Have to change up the current mid structure it's not working

THIS. What a crucial moment in the game. I know it's the modern trend and it often comes off, and we love it when it does, but isn't it deflating when it doesn't? I think the trick is to use it close to goal where it clearly is more effective than the straight run set shot. I think anything beyond 20 metres turns it into an unacceptable risk. As for the Meatball, that was the most effective game from a small forward this year. He seems more physically developed than Lonie. Has a greater presence and knows where the goals are. Worth a trot through the midfield? Definitely. He's ready.

Small forward roll is underrated by many... it's vital in today's footy . The days of relying on tall forwards to clunk a heap [*]of marks in pressure games ( like finals ) are over. Teams or so adept at defendsive set up, zoning and paring off to double team means you need small players buzzing around at the feet of the forwards, I think it may be likely the stats in finals show the small forwards out score the talls.
I'd like to see Minch given a decent run he did look more likely than Leonie. Not sure he has a tank for the middle but suspect he will develop one
