Spot on, MB. Bevo won a flag doing just as you described. Let's hope AR becomes Bevo 2.0 and not Ross 2.0.

The 'tom, tom drums' are starting to sound. On The Couch tonight on Foxtel were starting to come up with plenty of queries re Lyon, the Freo team game plan & and the 'wobbles' players he continues to play, eg Zac, Ibbotson,Suban, Johnston etc I think you have to read JK Rawlings, Harry Potter books to know what a 'wobble' is. I assume 'wobblers' are similar to the GOP role players he loved during his Saints time.

The panel posed 'are the players listening and believing now'.

The media in the West last season were questioning Ross and his ability to change & develop a team, now if the Eastern States media are starting to beat the tom tom drums as well, Ross mightn't see out his contract.

Oh so sad for 'Ross the Loss'.

Freo finished last year with a % of 74.3.

Some of the Lyontologists were claiming it was all part of some secret master plan. Many in the media pushed this line.
The line was that Lyon was cunningly tanking but would 'bounce back hard' this year due to some supposed wisdom that noone else understood. Lyon did nothing to dispel this mythical belief and pretended to act coy and give off an impression he knew what the problems were and could easily fix them. 'The structures are easily fixed' are one of his usual remarks.

In reality they were trying and he had absolutely no idea what to do. This year's pathetic performances proves that there is indeed no master plan, no secret formula, no master coach. Just plain no idea.

The fraud is unravelling. The curtain is being pulled back. And there is nobody home.

The way he speaks publicly about his young players is just foul. He publicly mocks them and emasculates them. Why? To assert his authority. The man is a creep and will be found out.

The Freo Board are stuck with this caustic contract. Should they rip the band aid off and apply treatment (at great cost) or just let the sore fester and become gangrene?

I would not want to be a Freo Board member in the next 24 months.

It's history repeating itself really.

Inheriting a team on the cusp of being genuine contenders and built by someone else, then ballsing it up. Sound familiar?

Destined never to win a flag due to his lack of daring.

Talking Footy highlighted tonight that Freo haven't recruited one decent player in Lyin's time.

I think Lyon has already been found out - a playing core of 6-odd stars supported by GOPs who all have a "role" and each have the game plan vigorously drilled into their skulls. The game plan itself, team defence and pressure on the ball carrier. It's gotten him close, even painstakingly close, but still just falls agonisingly close. Opposition depth and star power keeps overcoming him.

I almost can't blame him for believing so strongly in this philosophy. He was at the Swans during their earlier grand finals and they just scrapped over line in 2005 and lost by a point in '06. Heck, we drew a grand final in 2010 against a team at least 7 goals better than us. Can't get much closer to winning one than that. But I think that if Lyon's career has proven one thing, it's that a well-executed game plan and a team of well-coached toilers are no substitute for A-grade depth and match-winners.

I think the writing was on the wall for Freo before last season started, but Lyon (like us in 2011) took a quite few losses to come to terms with the reality of his playing group and where they were heading. Even then, it was like he was almost implying that it was all part of the longer term plan and the media jumped board - Ross the sly fox who doesn't do rebuilds, he "regenerates." One thing I'm confident in knowing about Lyon is that he has no interest in rebuilding or developing a young team, he's interested in winning a premiership. That's the Ross Lyon sales pitch and that's what he's hired to do, end of story. I would think he'd be trying to mirror this so-called regeneration off the Hawks, recruit star talent already developed and ready to go.

Still, as much as I think that we've probably seen Lyon's best, write him off at our peril. He's defied his critics before and he's had a fare share of them. I certainly can't see Freo playing in another grand final as long as Lyon's there for the remainder of his contract, but let's not be surprised if they make a late charge to finals. For our sake I hope not, as it might make Fyfe even harder to lure away.

Until we have an administration that demands success and a playing group that bleeds for the guernsey, St. Kilda will just be a sh*tty football club.

I don't think we are good enough yet and it would be a huge risk. I think the club needs to hold fire on recruiting big names. Bring in value for money players on a needs basis.

We need to use the draft and keep developing our list.

Fyfe will only 26 at the start of next season. He'd be expected to play for another 5-6 years at his best.

Freo were hammered by injuries last year - far more than others. On top of losing their most experienced players. I think Lyon expcted them to bounce back this year, and hence played his most experienced team in the first two rounds. Reality has hit him and them in the face. The game plan is not up to it, the players no longer have the enthusiasm or ability to carry it out. Trouble ahead.

Agreed, DS. I expected Freo to improve, purely on the back of the returns from injury of Fyfe and Sandilands. They traded well, bringing in Hamling, Hill and McCarthy. Impressive stuff. It would appear as though the trouble may be something deeper. Maybe RL's use by date is five years. 2007-11 and 2012-2016. There is, of course, a long way to go, but the signs are not good.

Freo's midfield is very strong - I mean Mundy, Fyfe, Neale - they also have outside run with the two Hills.
They have also improved their forward line.

I would swap midfields, but I'd keep Richo.

RL should be doing much better with the players he has.

Lyon is blindly loyal to his foot soldiers aged over 25.
Determined to crush the confidence of anyone under the age of 23.
Hed still have the Bont in the WAFL if Freo had drafted him telling the public he 'isnt ready' and needs to work on his game.
Absolute poison.

Yes. Yes he should. It's why I think "there's trooble at mill" in the shockers camp. Give us the Hills and Fyfe and watch us go.

Could this give us a chance to get Lachie Weller for 2018. He'd be handy.

I guess Ross didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition in W.A., right WW? Especially when amongst his weaponry is Fyfe, surprise and an almost fanatical devotion to defence...

Not everyone Firey. I was never a 'In Ross We Trust' or 'Ross the Boss' groupie. I begrudgingly accepted him, as the club had appointed him coach.
I was really bored with the way we played. One could drift off for a nana nap during the game, wake up and the team would be doing 'the same old, same old, chip the ball backwards, chip the ball sideways , handball backwards, fumble the ball over the boundary line and so the score would be moribund once the Saints had hit the lead.

I was disappointed, attacking players like Roo, Dal, Milne, Gram, Lenny, Kosi et al were often kept on a leash once the side had hit the front - no risk, don't bury the opposition = boredom.

Female intuition and preservation, taught me very early on in life........... Never trust a man with shifty eyes and boyo boy Lyon's eyes are cold & shifty. IMHO

Ly-ontologically speaking, his processes and systems start to break down after 2 or 3 years.
It's an ontological (organisational) mess at Freo - but it's hard to believe that a side with such a strong midfield would not get itself going at some stage this year, despite Lyon.
