Totally agree with this thread they are all too slow (Ross, Armitage & Dunstan) to play in the one midfield. A team could carry 1 but not 3 of them.

Speed can win contested ball also Richo have you ever thought of that?

Melbournes midfield are now equal to any in the comp and they have gone about their rebuild in the right manner by drafting & trading for a dominant classy mids. We have a group of plodders and Richo wont try or develop anyone else.

I think you're delusional.

The word 'develop' is one of the overrated in footy.

You can't polish a turd. All players have deficiencies in their game. Coaches and scouts are able to identify these flaws easily, and very early on. Usually before they're even drafted - And obviously the opposition exploit them. You either need to be able to fix your flaws, or have a skill set that outweighs the flaw. (ie. freak pace and skills, or ball getting ability to outweigh a total lack of defensive skills)

In many cases, the flaws are simply a result of them being boys, and they will be eradicated from their game as they mature. Some aren't.

'Develop' doesn't mean chuck some average young player in the team and he'll magically come good. That's what some people seem to think can happen. It never does.

Many, many decent young kids have had their careers ruined by being played too early when they aren't ready - either mentally or physically. Very few mediocre kids suddenly become great by being played in the 1s where they're out of their depth either from an ability perspective, or a maturity perspective.

AFL players these days, are 'developed' every day. Because they're not picked doesn't mean they're not being developed. Richardson meets every player on the list every week to discuss their progress. Every player is constantly being 'developed', whether they're playing in the 1s or not.

So who do we have on our list that is quick that you think should be brought in to play a key midfield role?

Who do think is highly skilled enough to come in a hit targets forward of the centre consistently?

Who do you think we have sitting the 2s that is good enough to come in and get 30 touches every week in the midfield?

Jack Sinclair and Acres are really the only two I see on our list that could potentially be any good. And it's not a given - they've not shown anything extraordinary. But try to imagine for a second, a lumbering, reactive Blake Acres in the centre square on Saturday afternoon! He's way too slow to play in the midfield, and doesn't have the defensive game to mask it. He doesn't get the ball anywhere near enough to play midfield and butchers it when he gets it.

He needs to be 'developed' - but I don't understand how those parts of his game will get better in the 1s, as opposed to the 2s. I'm not against him playing in the 1's (assuming he's doing everything off-field that's expected of them all) - but he's hardly going to make a huge difference.

Jack Sinclair is probably the one that I'd like to see get regular games.

But seriously, the reaction to coaching and selection after a loss is laughable.

There seems to be this belief that we have all these world beaters in the 2s with blistering speed, lethal footskills and the ability to walk in and get 30 touches in the midfield.

JM I think you are a rude pr...k but lets not confuse that with a knowledgeable one!

Of course the other mids need developing in the 2's and Richo has now had 3 years to achieve that. Who else other than Acres and Sinclair have had a run in the middle at Sandi. Webster was drafted as a mid and has been pidgeon holed as a back pocket, similarly McKenzie. Minchington IMO gives more in the middle than Ross and Dunstan yet doesnt get enough time there.

On Saturday why not try Roberton or Gilbert as a tall RR on Oliver - Richo cant or wont think outside the square. It was his worse coaching effort I have seen. It wasnt Melbournes forward line that was killing us it was there mids, clearances and ease of ball movement. Richo just keeps going back to the same players hoping they will turn it around when they dont have the attributes to do it, dumb coaching!

Its easier to say we dont have the cattle than to suggest Richo had an absolute s*** day as match day coach!

Can you name a single coach in the past 15 years that has reverted back to the dark ages and swung wild moves in order to pinch a H&A game?

With the inclusion of Jordan Lewis and development of Oliver, Brayshaw, Petracca, Neal-Bullen, Stretch & Viney who is better?

Adelaide and WCEs and St.Kilda. At this stage. They've played one good game. Or more accurately, two good quarters. The Melbourne supporters were ready to burn the joint down at quarter time. They have an awfully long way to go. Are Port suddenly premiership favourites? Or Adelaide?

Do you realise that Luke Dunstan has never played a single VFL game in his entire career? Not a single game.

http://www.aflplayerratings.com.au/Rati ... ke-DUNSTAN

In 2014 he was straight in to the AFL side in Rd 1. When he was injured - he was returned immediately.
In 2015 he missed three games but was immediately returned to the AFL side.
In 2016 he missed a game with a hamstring. Straight back in again.
Does the club think he is Luke Parker or something? Even Luke Parker played two in the NEAFL in his first season and he is about 200% better than LD.

Absolute delusional stuff. The coach is smitten and is now so determined to prove himself correct that he has lost all perspective.

armo's best is past him, ross is around his peak, dunstan will continue to improve. he's the best of our inside mids going forward. the future is he, steven, steele, acres, billings, and hopefully we trade, draft in an elite, or by some miracle freeman becomes one. gresham to me will be too important as a goal kicker. ross, armo, stevens will add depth.

Agreed, Con. Richo is showing a disturbing trend for endlessly backing his favourites. Dunstan, Ross, Armo, Gilbert, Geary, Savage, Webster, Weller et al. Blacres isn't in that club despite being more gifted than any of them. Paddy isn't either. Our two most talented youngsters (apart from Gresh) seem to so end a lot of time in the VFL. Unlike the aforementioned who seem to have permanent Visas for the senior side. Things that Make you go hmmmmmm!

I worked for a company where 3 workers got obviously preferential treatment in a similar fashion. The rest of us got more and more jacked off, and it caused ill-feeling and ruined the dynamic.
Richo is going to kill the team spirit, and I'm worried that we'll end up like the Dockers of last year.
You know, keep picking Gilbo even though he's a liability, and keep Blake at Sandy, and the bad feeling spreads like a virus

Luke is like

Lonie, McCartin, Rice, Billings, Longer... they are the worst runners at the club over distance or repeat!

Athletically deficient, and gets exposed! Can he work on this, yep.... he's slow as f***
But a lot of mids are, but he has a pathetic motor too, slow and no endurance??? Htf can he spread with seasoned afl mids??
He couldn't run outta sight at midnight!

Lonie, agile, but not fast, or fit

Billings is Lazy, has a fairly lean build, runs about half as hard as Dal

McCartin will never be a great endurance athlete, we know that... why isn't he ripped to shreds and strong as f***
He is a full time pro athlete and has been for 3 years... he trains about 1/5 as hard as Rooey at 15 years his junior

Rice, well he's just a tubby kid... kudos to him, after a year of being relatively fat for an afl player, he's shed near 10kg. Rice is actually quick.

Seb was for 3 years, a poor runner... he's still slow, but he worked hard on his engine, like Newnes is AFL standard as a result.
Sinclair and Acres went to another level this season.

The rest, in particular Luke are just not AFL level runners. Therefore ineffective players. With a full ground press, getting up and back and spread from stoppage.
