Do we get anything for finishing first? A trophy? A flag? A plaque? Money?

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Close to completely irrelevant. A ladder based on the last game for each team might have a bit of meaning. Time to face our Demons - then we'll know where be at.

Eleven teams won two out of their three, and another five at least one. Collingwood averaged the highest score, at 101.3 points, and their only loss came after the siren against Fremantle. St Kilda were the stingiest defensively, conceding an average of just 54.3 points per game, and their only defeat was by just three points to Sydney in the final game on Sunday night.

Of course it's difficult to compare teams at different stages of preparation and fielding different strength line-ups. But you can only take on what's put before you.

To that end, St Kilda's 92-point demolition of Carlton in week three was pretty complete, Josh Bruce finishing with seven goals and midfield recruit Jack Steele dominant. Jack Billings also looked ready to deliver on his promise.

It showed the Saints – helped by the 92-point thumping of an inexperienced Carlton – to be on top with a whopping percentage of 155.2. St Kilda's three-point loss to Sydney in the final game of the pre-season series was its only loss for the competition, form which is likely to stand it in good stead as it aims to make finals for the first time since 2011.

Those with long memories will recall a less than excited skipper Lenny Hayes and former coach Grant Thomas holding up the Wizard Cup after the Saints won the 2004 pre-season Grand Final. However, the victory was a signal that the team was about to emerge

Hmmm. Do you believe in omens? 2004. Pre season premiers. We rise and return to the finals. 2008. Pre season premiers. We return to the finals and rise again. 2017. Pre season "premiers" again. We will rise again. And I so advise.
