Port Adelaide to unleash big guns in pre-season opener against St Kilda on Friday

PORT Adelaide has all its big guns - in particular lead ruckman Patrick Ryder and key forward Charlie Dixon - clear to play from the start of the Power’s three-game pre-season series this week.

And the big decision to be made after training on Tuesday is whether gun midfielder Robbie Gray, who was held back from the internal trial on Friday, is called into action against St Kilda in the JLT Community Series opener at Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

The Power match committee took note of encouraging fitness reports on Ryder and Dixon, who played limited time in Friday evening’s trial game. Ryder was subbed out after the first half; Dixon played the first three quarters as part of their measured comebacks to competitive football.

CHANGE UP: WHAT PORT WILL DO DIFFERENTLY THIS PRE-SEASON

NEW ROLE: WINGARD SET FOR MORE MIDFIELD MINUTES

There also was good news for midfielder Matthew White, who is on the comeback path after playing just four minutes last season before suffering a year-ending shoulder injury. He was taken out of the internal trial after half-time after feeling tightness on a calf. This may be a pointer to avoiding the hard deck at Etihad Stadium.

Power senior assistant Matthew Nicks says there will be a calculated approach to fielding Ryder, who is building his fitness and match base after being forced to sit out last season by the WADA-imposed ban; and Dixon, who had ankle surgery in November.

“We do want to see Charlie and Paddy as much as we can ... without tipping it over,” Nicks said. “We do want to get footy into them.

Charlie Dixon is expected to line-up for Port Adelaide against St Kilda.
“We are keen to build (form and momentum) through this JLT series. But that does not mean we play everyone (in all three games) - or go as hard as we can through all three games. It’s not about the win-loss.”

Port Adelaide has ruled out three players from selection in the 26-man squad to be named on Tuesday (Tuesday) - veteran forward Angus Monfries (shoulder), ruckman-forward Dougal Howard (knee) and inexperienced forward Jesse Palmer (groin).

Ryder’s post-game review from the Power assistant coaches - after going head-to-head with Matthew Lobbe and young ruckman Billy Frampton on Friday night - may be a pointer to senior coach Ken Hinkley again ordering limited game time for his preferred lead ruckman.

New ruck assistant coach Brendon Lade noted of Ryder: “It took Paddy a little while to get going, to get back in the game again. But he’s been doing really well at training so he’ll continue to improve.”

Lobbe’s encouraging form allows Hinkley to be reserved with Ryder. As Lade noted of Lobbe: “It’s the best game he’s played for a while; he was great. He’s been training really well, so hopefully that continues.”

Port Adelaide will be out of SA just once during the JLT series. The Power will play Richmond at Mount Gambier on Sunday, Match 5 and close the pre-season against Hawthorn at Sunday, March 12.

The Saints confirmed on Monday that key defender Carlisle, who has been training strongly, will play against Port, while three other recruits from other clubs — ex-Collingwood tall defender Nathan Brown, former Giant midfielder Jack Steele and Koby Stevens (Bulldogs) are also expected to have their first outings for their new club.

By the way, if you're in town and a member, you can upgrade from GA to a Level 1 centre wing seat via the Ticketmaster website for $10 (+ their garbage "booking fee")

Montagna suffered a calf injury and will miss but apparently not in doubt for Round 1.

Having watched the first few matches and seeing our (and Port's) team for Thursday, it appears that most clubs have changed their preseason preparation. They seem to be going for near full strength teams for their preseason openers, when in recent years it has been young teams with veterans not playing.

Of course it should be. Money grubbing pricks. It's just a PRACTICE MATCH.

Are they that dumb not to get it yet?

Teams that missed the finals last season will naturally be going in with stronger line-ups as their players have been back training longer.

agreed that is pretty much our full list and the look of 2017 ( yes I expect Montagna to be in and out of the side)
then we have the old chestnut of not playing Hickey & Longer in the same side ( enter stage left J Carlisle )

good luck to J Steele, Koby Stevens, N Brown, & Carlisle

I think it would be out of...
Savage, Lonie, Longer, Webster, Wright, Sinclair, and McKenzie.

They'd want to get a look at Steele and Stevens as the unknown quantities.

I'm really not sure why there is any sort of cap on squad size in the first two games. Should be allowed to get a look at everyone who is fit for some part of the match.

There will be 8 interchange players for the first 2 JLT series matches then 6 for the final one.
Therefore 26 players with 3 to miss from the original squad.
It is interesting that none of this years draftees/rookies are in the squad so we are going all out from game 1!

The AFL’s recommendation is below surrounding guaranteed entry:

Access to the JLT Community Series matches is subject to capacity and is not guaranteed. The AFL recommends that members register for a general admission ticket in order to guarantee entry. Membership registrations are subject to availability on a first come, first serve basis and subject to an additional fee. Transaction fees may also apply. Fans are advised to purchase in advance to secure their ticket and avoid disappointment.

Our advice:

If members are travelling a long way we strongly suggest members to upgrade that way there’s no question around entry for them - this obviously doesn’t include the game at Etihad Stadium against Port Adelaide – there will be no entry concerns given the size of the venue.

Round 1

St Kilda v Port Adelaide
Etihad Stadium
Thursday 23 February – 7:40pm

But how do teams get to have a look at their new, younger, recruits against an opposition team apart from these practice games?
What's the point in playing your best side at this time of the year?
If we did this in years past then Gresham, Sinclair, Templeton, et al wouldn't have got a game early doors.

think they'll be resting a few after this game and we'll get a look at some youngsters vs carlton.

I wonder if it's because it's at Etihad (closer to a normal match simukation given the size of the ground / spectacle). So we play closer to our actual team, and let the younger guys have a go on the smaller grounds.

Hmmm
Dunno smaller ground will mean more congestion
More packs more contact will be harder on the young bodies
So who knows what the coaches are thinking

Seeing as P.A. have named a full squad I think our coaching panel would like to get a bit of an idea of how we stack up so we've gone with something close to our probable round 1 line up. The possibles will get a run against Carlton who'll also be wanting to try out a few newbies. I think its a good idea to have a crack at P.A. as they are one of the sides contending with us for a spot near the bottom end of the eight this year. Can't wait to see how we go... roll on Thursday.
