Who gets in
We are all getting excited about the depth we are collecting , so thought run an exercise to see who gets in some of thos epositions up for grabs.'
As i see it here are the locks in our best 22:
B: Geary, Carlisle,
HB:Dempster, , Montagna
C: Roo, Steven,Newness
HF:Membrey, Bruce,Weller
F: , McCartin,
Foll: Hickey, Armitage, Ross
Int:
Based on this we need
Big defender - Brown, Goddard, Gilbert ( can play big)
Half back type: - Webster, White, Rice, Roberton, Savage
Forward who can rotate up ground: Gresham, Billings, Minchingotn, Lonie, Sinclair, Wright,
On ballers/ wings: McKenzie, Dunstan, Acres, Stevens, Steele,
If you play a second ruck? Pierce, Holmes, Longer
So by recognising we have around 8 spots up for grabs- Based on everyone available who is our best 22 - fill in the blanks!

Re: Who gets in
Billings and Roberton are locks.
Very hard to pick a 22.
Dunstan Acres DMac Steele Gresham Savage Stevens Long Webster Gilbert Brown and White will all push for games early on.
I expect we will use 32 players this year.

Agree Roberton is a lock. Dunstan too. Billings I hope will also be a lock.Con Gorozidis wrote:Billings and Roberton are locks.

Re: Who gets in
This is a great thread, breaking it down in terms of selection.
From the original post I'd have Roberton in and although he will be in, I don't personally believe Armitage is a lock. But given he is in the leadership group, that is unlikely.
My team has Dunstan and Stevens as walk ups. As is Gresham.
Acres will be in some trouble, Brown not a certainty. And from the intraclub - Steele did some very impressive things!
Somehow I need to weave both McKenzie and Webster in.
Geary Dempster Webster
Roberton Carlisle Montagna
Billings Ross Newnes
Membrey Bruce Riewoldt
Gresham McCartin Weller
Longer Steven Dunstan
Stevens McKenzie Armitage Sinclair
Unpopular opinion - Longer is in the team!
Steele will be in like a bullet by mid year. Acres to hopefully force and cement. No Brown, gone small.

Re: Who gets in
He looked like a locked and loaded AFL footballer in the intra club match. Given he was on a cricket scholarship at Haileybury (I think) and has actually been drafted to an AFL club whilst still at school makes me think he's a pretty serious sportsperson. Hope we've found a gem.The Fireman wrote:Battle ?

Re: Who gets in
B: Geary, Carlisle (Hogan), GILBERT
HB: Dempster (Watts), Roberton (Pederson), Montagna
C: REIWOLDT, Steven, Billings
HF: Membrey, Bruce, Weller
F: WRIGHT, McCartin, Gresham
Foll: Hickey, Armitage, Ross
Int: Dunstan, Savage, Mackenzie, Newnes
Emg: KStevens, Longer, Acres
A lot of fans here under-estimating Gilbert, Wright, Dunstan and Mackenzie. ALL are Locks. Many also OVER-Rating Acres and Brown. Both not TOP 22.
Gilbert and Roberton to take Pederson and run him into the ground. It will be too easy. Meanwhile Carlisle TO STOP HOGAN.
WE will murder the demons. Will be too skillful off half back and too strong up forward. AND we will be too tough in the midfield.
This will be our ROUND 1 team. bookmark.

Re: Who gets in
I reckon the improved form of Acres around the ground was one of the reasons we had a solid end to the 2016 season.SMS wrote:B: Geary, Carlisle (Hogan), GILBERT

Re: Who gets in
Automatic picks in round 1 (injuries aside): Riewoldt, Steven, Geary, Dempster, Montagna, Armitage, Bruce, McCartin, Hickey, Carlisle.
Next Picked but may go into the first category with some good JLT form: Ross, Dunstan, Savage, Gilbert, Newnes, Weller, Membrey, Roberton.
That gives 18 of the starting 22. Fill the rest as needed with team structure and current year gameplan.

Re: Who gets in
I thought Hickey was sensational last season. No disrespect to Longer, but it's going to take more than one practice match to change my opinion on that.Spinner wrote:This is a great thread, breaking it down in terms of selection.

Same for Acres. Showed plenty towards the end of last season and one practice match doesn't dislodge him for mine. If you can see past his occasional brain fades, there is a star in the making

Re: Who gets in
Just to help you the following players are a lock for Round 1:
Geary
Roberton Carlisle McKenzie
Riewoldt Ross Newnes
Membrey Bruce Billings
Gresham McCarten Weller
Hickey Armitage Steven
Stevens Dunstan Wright
Likely that 3 spots are up for grabs and will be decided during JLT, and influenced by form and injury.
Also doesn't mean they are a lock each week, but at this stage, the above players have done enough over pre-season and early form to be given first crack.

Re: Who gets in
At least two of those three will need to be defenders, only one key defender in that list.jaxons wrote:Just to help you the following players are a lock for Round 1:

Yes and clearly Brown or Dempster take the full back position.dragit wrote:Dempster, Gilbert, Brown, Savage, Montagna some big omissions from that list jax
Gilbert, Savage and Montagna I think maybe only 2 of those 3 can fit in at this stage (assuming Roberton, Geary and McKenzie are all in, and I can assure you Geary and Roberton are!)
Also Steele, Acres, Sinclair, Lonie and Webster who are all highly regarded I cannot fit in.
These are great problems to have in case you didn't notice!

Re: Who gets in
For the three pre-season games, I would like to see all of our draftees get two games, and all of our traded players, including last years, get to play in at least two games.

This is superb info!
Wright seems to be on the right side of the seevtopm fence, including back half of last year.
Great to see Dunstan, Stevens and McKenzie considered locks.

Interesting to see that you have Koby as a lock ahead of Steele and Acres. All three big bodied mids.jaxons wrote:Just to help you the following players are a lock for Round 1:
