You have to worry about the confidence the club has in Longer and Pierce after Holmes upgraded and now rookie another ruck.

#29 Rowan Marshall– First time I’d seen Marshall play this season and I was impressed. Is very agile and covers the ground well better than some of the other talls. His light frame doesn’t stop him in the ruck where he did go forward and kick goals.""

Looks to have some pace and mobility (for a big unit) in the highlights package.

Good pick up as a key position player.

Mitch McCarthy we dodged a bullet there.

Yes, I think we planned on Mitch McCarthy but he was stolen by the filth.
We would certainly have made McCarthy a rookie B if he had survive the rookie draft.

Is the club stocking up on rucks knowing that ruckman with a few years under their belt have trade currency.

OR

Is this a case of looking for a 2nd or relief ruckman.
That is Hickey, Longer, PIerce, Holmes are all 1st rucks.
At present when our relief ruckman Josh Bruce comes up against a genuine 1st ruck he gets slaughtered.
He breaks even when pitted against the opposition's relief ruck.
But oh what a difference if you had a tall forward who was of 1st ruckman quality.
He could dominate the opposition's relief ruckman.

Also when Josh Bruce goes into the ruck we lose our centre half forward.
At present Riewoldt can take over there.
Seems he knows how to play the position a bit.
But when he is gone it will wreck our team structure.

It would be great to have sitting in a forward pocket, a tall marking forward, with the speed to chase down and tackle, but also have the height and skill to compete with the best 1st ruckmen.

I think you are on the money. He's been recruited to play in defence. A big marking, mobile tall defender. Tested very well for a big man at the combine both in the beep and 20 metre sprint. So big, quick who can also take a grab. Pretty much what the doctor ordered I would have thought. Also young enough to develop.

Very happy with this pick.

Maybe but if no-one picked him we could have had McCarthy as a rookie B.
We would have been able hold him for 3 years like we did with Holmes before making a decision on him.

Couldve taken Sam Walker the under 18 AA key defender. needed to edit this* it turns out the original article i read had a typo at his height i saw 195cm when he is actually 185cm*.

Anyway i like the kids kicking action, doesnt have the same "iffyness" that you see with other rucks, Very mobile and seems to make quick decisions. Mind you needs to gain 10-15kgs.

I see the argument for him to become a defender but we do have Nick Coghlan on the list as well. Will be interested to see what the means for Hickey, Holmes, Longer and Pierce come end of 2017.

Seems a "like-for-like" replacement for Rhys Stanley - I know people are saying CHB but why not a resting forward (probably fwd pocket) ???

Difference is Stanley was soft going for the ball, did not want to get hurt or break a sweat.
He would never have been value at St Kilda.
Geelong seems to have changed his approach for the better.
He goes harder at the ball with more determination.
Both teams won on that deal.

Yep, I agree. This bloke also seems to be a better tap ruckman.

I dont believe Stanley was soft. HIs main drawback imo was reading the play. Seemed to have little in the way of timing or reading the ball. Went either too early or too late.

He got cut from USA basket ball as he kept fainting when he pushed himself. Cant find a reason for it.

ST KILDA

Rowan Marshall (North Ballarat)

Position: Ruck

Height: 201cm

Weight: 97kg

Bio: The Saints also had only one pick in the rookie draft and used it on mature-age ruckman Marshall. The 21-year-old stands 201cm and is dangerous in front of goal. Recruiting guru Gary Buckenara has watched Marshall closely at the Roosters this year and listed him at No.46 in his top 50 draft rankings last week: 'He’s flexible in that he can play up forward and at centre half-back as well because he’s quite athletic for his size. I think he deserves an opportunity.'

This is from the Ballarat Courier website.

"The rookie draft proved a fruitful one for Ballarat-based footballers as North Ballarat Roosters utility Rowan Marshall found his way onto St Kilda’s rookie list after being selected with pick 10.

Marshall originates from Portland and studied in Ballarat.

The agile 200cm prospect was the beneficiary of Roosters stalwart Orren Stephenson’s absence for large chunks of 2016, impressing recruiters with his ability to play in the ruck, drift forward as well as stints at centre-half-back throughout the year.

Rooster coach Marc Greig said Marshall was absolutely stoked.

"He still can't believe it,” Greig said.

"He would've been initially disappointed about not being actually drafted. But it doesn't matter now, you're at an AFL club full-time now. He gets an opportunity in a full-time environment - it's great.”

Greig said he had received plenty of phone calls regarding Marshall. Marshall’s greatest appeal is undoubtedly his versatility and the ability he has shown to play a range of positions and at 21 years of age is improvement now that he’s in an AFL system could be rapid.

Greig believes he will eventually become a ruckman.

"There's been a few phone calls, in regards to wanting to know more about him. With the year he's put together and his size and the way he moves. While he's still got a lot of developing he's certainly on the right track.

“But I think in four or five years he's going to a massive man so I think he will become a ruckman but at the moment I think he's best suited to being a key forward who spends a bit of time ion the ruck.

Seems like Greig thinks he still has a lot of growing and probably more filling out to do.

He looks and plays a lot like a young Travis Payze. If he has half of Payze' ability, we've done ok.
