Off season Injury update Nov 2016

Freeman off to Germany

St Kilda’s Nathan Freeman will next week head to a clinic in Germany in an attempt to finally overcome his ongoing hamstring issues.

Freeman will be accompanied by the club’s physiotherapist Andrew Wallis and St Kilda will be hoping that the treatment by a world-renowned soft tissue expert produces success similar to that achieved by Geelong’s Max Rooke.

St Kilda
The main concerns for St Kilda are key defender Hugh Goddard and inside midfielder Luke Dunstan. Goddard suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, and while those injuries are long-term and can be tricky, he should be fit for the start of the 2017 season. Dunstan had a shoulder reconstruction and while he will be able to run when pre-season begins, he will likely have to wait until the new year before he can join the main group. Backman Jake Carlisle is recovering from hip surgery and will be eased into pre-season. A broken collarbone for young forward Paddy McCartin is tracking well and his preparation should not be hindered. - Dinny Navaratnam

Rule them out for round one: None

ST KILDA recruit Jack Steele is facing a delayed start to pre-season as he continues his rehabilitation from a serious foot injury.

Traded to the Saints for a future second-round draft pick, the former Giant suffered the injury in a training mishap on the eve of the finals series.

With St Kilda’s first-to-fourth-year players set to begin pre-season training next Monday before the full list returns later this month, Steele will be on a limited program when he resumes.

He has just started walking without a moon boot and hopes to begin running soon with the aim of being introduced to full training in early 2017.

“It’s feeling good, hopefully I’m running in a couple of weeks,” Steele said.

Having surgery and recovering from it, apparently. Hip injuries are notoriously tricky.

So we've got newish players with a few problems - one with a tricky hip, one with a picky foot and one with a dickie hamstring. Great picks there.

Who knows. Who knows why Freeman only now has gone overseas and not months before?

The Saints start the year with one of the healthiest lists in the competition after 43 players completed training on Monday.

Isn't Montagna out until round one with a calf strain?
