Where is Jarryn Geary at, at the moment?

From what I saw today he turned over virtually every possession, and some idiot has named him in our best!

Same as where he always is. Easily in our best 22. A warrior. Poor disposal. Essentially probably one of those guys internally over-rated that the club loves a little more than they should. On a long contract too. Would not get a game at Hawthorn or any top 4 side. Gutsy as all get up. But that's not enough these days. Turnovers kill you in this day and age. Will have his 5 or so good games per year and soldier on.

At the risk of repeating, to move on we must move past Geary.

Honest and gives his best effort - no question.

But offers no run and is a rabbit in the headlights with the ball - a player opposition sides would be more than happy with when the ball in in his hands.

Must move on past such players - harsh but true.

The real problem is options, where Webster needs to be told that he must stand up and deliver this season or his time is done and dusted.

"from what I saw today" says it all. You obviously didn't see enough.

Huge heart, concrete skull, probably goes too hard at the ball at times and doesn't give himself enough time to steady.

In the cold, hard, light of day, for us to win the premiership players like Geary cannot be in the side. He has to be pushed out by someone with just as much honest effort but much better skilled. There's a few other players usually in that department as well unfortunately.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

LEAKED COPY OF JARRYN GEARY'S CONTRACT

ARTICLE 34.1

At all times he is employed by the club, Mr Geary shall be the clubs nominated PWB (Perennial Whipping Boy) to act as a lightening rod for disgruntled supporters to protect other players from criticism despite them demonstrating equally poor disposal and decision making.

Disposal kills us time and again, falls over when trying to tackle. Hard as nails yes but shouldn't be in our best 22. He's the Clint Jones of our defensive unit

I've been told time and again he's in our best 10 players, so my criticism of him is unjustified and wrong.

Yesterday's performance was vintage Geary, no better or worse than his average game.

An absolute liability by foot, from his first kick of the game a 15m chip to Roo which well 5 metres short, to that hilarious boundary line ankle dribble kick that would've been better executed by a one legged man, and all the headless chook moment in between.

In the worst half a dozen kicks in the afl. Doesn't mark overhead. Doesn't run and carry (actually is relatively slow) and is a poor decision maker.

The only thing he has going for him is he goes in hard. Good on him. Half the time he takes out his own teammate.

I recall a comparison to Easton Wood made of him by a poster during the offseason. There is bigger hope of peace in the Middle East, but I guess that's how blinded supporters become of the shortcomings of our own players.

He needs to be replaced as of 2 years ago.

*as a side not, this is not a criticism of Gearys attitude or of him as a bloke. He is just an abysmal footballer. Many blur the line.

Geary will never be A grade but is our next Jason Blake.

His kicking won't improve but he will give his all every minute he's on the field. No squibbing or holding back.

And autocorrect changed "Geary" to "heart"!

Except what made Blake such a valued team member was his versatility. Not just his heart. Blake was essentially a 2nd defender who could hold down Ruck or even play on a wing. Geary is not versatile and can only play one position.

The reality is Geary plays until someone is good enough to push him out. That might be B Rice or B White but both are years away if at all.
This is why we are a bottom 5 side.

Blake also got better throughout his career.

All teams will have players like Blake or Geary though. The harsh reality at present is that our list has way to many GOPs and not enough very good, and good players.

Jarryn is the sort of player who would have done well in the 50s and 60s. Alas, time has moved on, players are now bigger, stronger and more skilled. His courage is undoubted, in fact, I worry that it is more reckless. The young man is playing footy which does not require him to suffer a permanent injury or worse.

Jason Blake positively influenced the majority of his contests. (Unless rucking against Sandilands....)

WE tend to really focus on individual players. But for coaches its much more about systems. Geary I think provides the cover and two-way running that they feel they need with an under-sized and developing defence. Geary is almost a form of insurance. He no longer does much attacking more that cover defence and picking up guys sprinting forward. Later perhaps as our new defence develops we won't need that insurance.

With all due respect he is not able to "lock down" a damaging opposition small forward (or any forward for that matter).

The reason is that the ball is put to the advantage of forwards - and Geary is limited to standing the mark when he catches up.

We need lightning quick defenders able to close and pressure (including spoiling and negating that forward as an option) who also have the skill to open in the rebound with pace and superior foot skills, including distance.

This is Webster's reputation - but it has not been delivered as yet - and it needs to be NOW.

So we remain very, very weak in that area.

Which is exactly why Geary continues to get a game, and St Kilda still languish.

The two are related.

+1

Geary is the guy who will play 50 - 60 games with the next generation and then bow out when they get better than him. You cant fault his efforts and professional approach to preparation. He is a good role model who is asked to play a variety of roles and never shirks the issues. He developed during a very successful win/loss era and although he has lacked in certain areas he has excelled in others and he has made it through to leadership. He is a great clubman. If Geary plays in a premiership winning best 22 at St Kilda it will be in the next 2 years. This is very unlikely. If he is still in our best 22 in 3 years time a premiership will still be very unlikely.

With all due respect, this is such a fanciful post... Players with all of those attributes don't play in the back pocket, they win brownlows in the midfield. Let us know where we can get another Sean Burgoyne from...

That is why we have savage with the foot skills, geary with the attack on the contest, Gilbert with height and speed... but none of them the complete package but still better than most of younger players at this stage...

Webster & Roberton really need to show their worth this year, both old enough and experienced enough to make a call on IMO.

No, you're much too smart for me...

You should contact the club with genial plan of drafting lightning fast, creative, defensive/offensive, tall/medium defenders with incredible foot skills, vision, stopping ability and flamboyant dash. You may want to preface in about how you were sure Paul Cahill was going to be a superstar and you never rated Stephen Milne.

Geary plays because he is in our best 22... but I am looking forward to when players like Mckenzie/acres/rice can edge him out.
