Daniel Andrews just indicated on Nine News that the idea has bi-partisan support.

So now it is up to the Fed, and we know how they love giving money to anyone unless it is the coal industry or mining.

My family's roots are strong in St Kilda. Mum was brought up there as well as her kids. It's the reason we are mad Saints. I am stoked we may finally have a presence back in our heartland. Many older supporters will be rapt. Young ones shouldn't care as they've never really known a real home. Plenty of coffee options for the boys and "the scenery" is fine.

All these supporters that say "its not the training facilities that run out on the mcg" blah blah blah.
You completely miss the point.
That oval on fitzroy st Stkilda is going to be the most visible out of any training ground to people walking past of any melbourne team.
Fitzroy st for anyone who doesnt know goes off! and is vibrant all year round.
Anyone who lives in the area will have a feeling that its their team. Its the vibe of the thing.
Imagine the site of 40 saints players walking back and forth from recovery at stkilda beach to the facilities.(they might avoid the Gatwick hotel :) )
Its one huge P.R session that will be happening weekly.
The area is ten times more part of a local community than Ess, Rich, Coll, Hawks, Melb ,Geel, Carl and North.
All this helps membership numbers and the moral of the Stkilda Footy Club.

Might be dangerous for Gilbert, plenty of Kimmie types in Fitzroy st!

There's never been much parking near the Junction. When the Community Cup was held there you had to park twenty minutes walk away. Similar to Moorabbin in that way - but the public transport is obviously much better!

According to cricket Australia reporter the funding shortfall to get this done is $29m-$44m... Not the $15m in Carros article - so it sounds like there is still a fair bit of work to be done - fingers crossed

Good get. Also from that article:

"create a boutique venue with capacity for 7,000 spectators"

Unlikely we'll ever be playing AFL games in a 7000-capacity stadium!

Funding gap. Like when has there been a project without an initial or eventual funding gap? These things can be overcome. Besides, we know how to be patient... we are Saint's supporters.

Anyway, seems that at state parliamentary level both sides are committed, and federally the ALP is committed. Given some of the bodies pushing for this, I reckon that those bodies would be able to get an ear from the current federal government. (Isn't this mob meant to be the 'infrastructure government?  )

There are also 'commercial parties' interested. I don't know, but what are the odds that one Mr L Fox might be one of them...? (And didn't he tell the Saints there'd be no more $$$ backing without a commitment to get to the Junction?)

The AFL doesn't want a repeat of the start of this season whereby cricket kept them off the MCG.
We have already suffered massively financially helping subsidise Dockedlands Stadium that will go onto the assets side of the ledger for the (whole) AFL.
The current head of the AFL is (finally) a Saint...
Putting those together... I reckon there's a good chance that the AFL will chip in some more $$$ if needed.

So, for those reasons I'm not too concerned about funding issues, and if it takes more than two years to be completed... we know how to be patient. 8-)

... I also noted from that article that the initial capacity for watching cricket would be 7000...

Hmmmmmmm... that could easily be bumped up a bit more for a game of footy (plenty of people, myself included, happy to stand up to watch Sandy yesterday)...

Pre-season matches against the likes of the GWoganS... ready to roll. 8-)

I look forward to watching some of those games, whilst standing in the outer, and discussing all things Ormond footy club, KFC and Thai holiday retreats with Pluggsy. :D

Smart timing of GM to push for this while we are down and no-one can criticise him for favouring the Saints.

Surely CA can throw in a few bob. They must have millions.

Great move by the club. Hopefully when we get a standalone vfl club they'll play there. The location is also a lot more attractive for potential free agents who either have a house near the centre or interstaters happy to buy in a central location and not having to bother with visiting seaford all week.
