Improved Depth

Post: # 474129Post Animal Enclosure »

Our achilles heel has been drastically improved in the past 48 hours. While the four players that we have acquired may not be in the top 15 of our best team, they do put pressure on the incumbents and that in itself will improve the list.

Schneider
*Goal kicking
*Touch of pace
*Pressure off Milne
*Pinch hit in midifield

Dempster
*Backline depth
*Versatile (192cm but can play on smalls)
*Releases Gram & Gilbert up the ground
*Thumping kick
*Room to improve

King
*Proven tap ruckman
*All Australian
*Allows Kosi to play @ FF/CHF
*Last game showed how good he can still be
*Combo with M.Gardiner very enticing

C.Gardiner
*Solid 3rd forward
*Room to improve
*Change of scenery may bring out the best
*Will compete with Allen, Ferguson & Watts
*Depth

We also hold onto pick 9, the 3rd & 4th rounders as well as Leigh Fisher.

A bloody good week of trading that has filled some obvious deficiencies. How well they are filled is a different matter.

Perfect trading...

For pick 26 we gained 4 players - including 3 premiership players as well as a VFL premiership player! I think all of the players can add something to this side; and i'm expecting a big year from Charlie I think he is capable of being a handful up forward!

Brilliant work kenny, Ross & Peake! Looking forward to next year...

True... Pick 90 can be virtually discounted as we would not have used it anyway - don't think Geelong will either...

Spot on - traded for depth

This is where we have been severely lacking in the past couple of years.

Depth is important for two reasons:

1. gives you a reserve to call upon if players are injured
2. forces players to compete for a spot in the first 22.

Every side has their first 15 or so picked every week, if available.

This is the cream - the Dal Santos, Koschitzkes, Sam Fishers, Riewoldts and Hayes, plus important KPPs.

The last six or seven spots are to be filled by those players who are in form and deserve to be picked.

The past couple of years these positions have been filled by the likes of Blake, Fiora, Leigh Fisher, the Clarkes, Rix, Jones, Ferguson etc, without too much competition from anyone. Even Thommo and Frankie could get games with the Saints - there was no-one fighting them for selection.

Introduction of Schneider, Dempster and Gardner to the squad forces players like Fiora, Leigh Fisher and the Clarkes to make every post a winner.

Forget the crappy skill errors or shirking of physical contests. There's no room for that anymore. You fail, you're back to Casey for a week.

People can make all the comments they like about the players recruited but they were not recruited to gather 40 possessions, take 20 marks and kick 10 goals per game. We already have our "stars" - our untouchables.

It's the performance of the last six or seven players on our list that is going to decide whether we win a premiership or not.

SMART TRADING - WELL DONE
