A view from a few weeks ago ....... GEELONG ADVERTISER

01Oct07

A MONTH ago there was doubt over whether experienced ruckman Steven King would be at Geelong next season.

Today, King is a premiership ruckman and has declared that he wants to be a part of the Cats' line-up in season 2008.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, but said after Saturday's grand final he saw no reason why he should look elsewhere to continue his AFL career.

``It's just a great bunch of guys here,'' King said.

``What we've achieved and some of my best mates are here, why would you want to leave that?

``Your life experiences as a person and as a footballer teaches you that you've got to take every chance you get in anything in life.

``The boys knew something special was going to happen this year with what happened last year and the disappointment and everyone woke up and had a good hard look at themselves.''

Saturday's grand final was just King's sixth senior game of the year, a season where has been hampered by injuries. He admitted there were times when he doubted he would get back into the side with the outstanding form of Brad Ottens and the rapid improvement of Mark Blake.

But his form over the past month in the VFL was enough to convince Cats coach Mark Thompson that he was worth a place in the team.

King, who is the longest-serving player at Geelong, said he believed the Cats were on the verge of an exciting era and wanted to be a part of that.

``We've got 14 or 15 players that have played over 100 games and we've drafted really well and we've developed all these young guys into great players,'' King said.

``I think everything's just fell into line and the list we've now got is fantastic.''

Let's hope he brings this philosphy over with him & spreads the word
