As I've said b4, we'd be mad not to pick up a possible quality ruckman for nothing,

we've got room in the cap, we've still got pick 9 and picked up some tough runninig goal potential and running back. We need a ruckman, unless we get cox (I would trade 9 for him in a a second) then we need to pick up King,

Then my strategy next year would be to start devloping younger talent, but our window is still open whilst maintaining a youth policy for higher picks.

A lot of short sighted people on here.

King absolutely carved up Brooks in the VFL this year. Absolutely tore him a new one. Yet some think that Barry is an answer as a back up ruckman.

If we have a chance to pick up a 28 year old ruckman (who has just played a blinder in a grand final against quality ruckmen) for next to nothing then we have very little to lose & a lot to gain if he can maintain his fitness & form

Geelong will only accept a pick early enough for them to use.

If we trade them our last pick, say a round 6 selection then that would mean that Geelong has to continue taking dud players all the way untill the sixth round.

If it takes a fourth rounder, id do it.

King could have another 4-6 years in him and was only the best performing ruckman in the grand final.

But if Saints are more the certain they could get King in the preseason draft then im defs all for it.

Steven King being linked to St Kilda.

That's the state of play at Geelong coming into today's trade deadline, with King looking increasingly likely to be playing elsewhere or be forced into retirement.

King, 28, met St Kilda coach Ross Lyon at Moorabbin yesterday.

Earlier in the week the Saints had offered Geelong youngster Mark Blake, who King replaced for the Grand Final, a massive three-year offer.

But when Blake knocked that back on Tuesday in favour of a new deal with the Cats, they turned their focus to King.

The writing was on the wall for King at Skilled Stadium when Blake and the Cats fourth ruckman Trent West, who impressed in the VFL this season, both signed new two-year contracts.

The salary cap at Skilled Stadium has tightened after the Cats were forced to increase their offer to Blake, who played 22 games as back-up to Brad Ottens this season, after the St Kilda approach.

King said last week he wanted to stay a Cat.

"Being 28 and with my history over the last couple of years I will definitely be realistic about where I am at . . . and hopefully we can come to something that looks after both parties," he said.

I'd love to get King.

I really think we should have a crack at getting him.

Well - just imagine this team?:

B: L.Fish, Max, Chips.
HB: Gram, Goose, Dempster
C: Dal, Harvs, Joey.
HF: Schnieder, Rooey, Goddard
F: Kossi, Watts, Milne
Ru: King, Hayes.
Ro: Ball.
Int: X.Clarke, Fiora, Gilbert, Blake.

Gardner, Brooks on standby.

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

Yes if we can get and him cheap...I fully agree (which LOL is a rarity  )

I would prefer not leaving him for the PSD....as I would imagine that the Blues would grab him. He would certainly give Judd and Stevens and Co a huge Boost....and their current rucks are complete crap....so why would they not grab him?

King should prefer us to the Blues though as he only has say 2 to 3 years left.....and the Blues will not be top 4 nexy year.

We therefore need to get King to nominate us....and swap him to the Cats for a late pick (which is basically not worth much anyway).....as the Cats would delist him anyway.

A 2 year contract is a fair deal.

The qusetion mark is his body...so the medical guys will need to give him a BIG once over.

Hopefully Gardi is ok....

In which case a ruck division Of Gardi with King only being used to spell him....say 70% Gardi...30% King would bea very good mix.

Both can also takea good grab up forward and kick goals.

This would also allow Kosi to just play asa power forward with Roo as the other tall.

Heard a report that we were looking at Guy Richards? If this is a case of King vs Richards King for mine hands down can't beleive we are even considering Richards he is worse than Hackland.

Why would Girlong want him to retire other than not wanting him to play against them tearing them a new one?

I'd think that a fit Gardiner and King ruck combo would be the best going around.

I did say fit.

I heard Balme interviewed before the the selection of King in the GF, and he commented that obviously his body was an issue, although over the previous 2 months he had been as durable as anyone.

Also, this would potentially the only time ever that King has finished the season fit - therefore would get a pre-season.

He'll only be 29 next year too. In ruckman terms, that aint old.

1/ Salary cap. It will free up room.

2/ to stop Blake walking out they will have had to have promise him the Number 2 gig.

King is too good a player to be happy playing as No 3 at his age.....

The same outcome would have been achieved if they had traded and got something for him.

Why retirement?

Im in total agreeance with Saintsrising,we need a ruckman Blake and Warnock arent going anywhere and Wood went to the pies.King is the only thing out there thats any good.Prefer to trade a late pick and getv him Now, rather than wait till the PSD as Carlton will pick him up!
It says in the Herald that he met with Ross at the club yesterday i think that might be on the cards.

Offer the Cats our last draft pick, they are going to cut him anyway ... if we try the PSD, he will be gone B4 our pick.

PSD two year deal mmm???? very risky option IMO

Only worth a one year deal and we might as well do it today what ever it takes two years is not the way to go if he wants to come for one year well good otherwise see what happens.

pick 9 for King?

He's not even worth pick 70. PSD or nothing.

Lock him with a late pick to Geelong, I'm sure they would rather something then nothing..

what MSG's post really confirms is that over the last 5-6 years we've stopped trying to draft and develop young ruckman (other than Brooks). We need to draft at least young ruck this year

I think they've got plans for Van Rheenan, but he might be a while off yet.

Let someone else develop them.

Josh Fraser was a No. 1 draft pick 8 years ago!!

Number 1!

Yet he's still coming along. He's by no means a star ruckman, and may never be, but won't be close until he's matured physically.

The play the role of a ruckman, a true ruckman, you need physical maturity.

It can take 10 years in the system to come good.

cam wood for example would be the perfect player to be coming up through the ranks if we had drafted him ahead of mini... he'd be competing with Brooks and Rix for a spot and would be under the tuteluge of Doc and possibly King

the stop gap ruckman such as Knobel, Rix, Capuano etc are only effective if u develop some1 while u have them... otherwise all we're doing is replacing 1 stop gap with another
