What could we possibly have that Melbourne would want?

I doubt we'd get him but I'd love to have him.

Somehow I doubt Watts holds much trade value.

surely not...

it would be a major coup if we were able too...

it would cost at least pick 9 plus a decent player

Mclean is slated to be Melbourne captain.

Bailey would be hung drawn and quarterd if he let McLean go.

Lance or James??

Agreed, you don't give up the type of player who wins hardball, is damaging when he uses it and can turn the tide in a game, especially when he's a young bloke that'll be the future of a ageing side.

A little more snooping throughout the day however, not a reliable source, and apparently he is not that happy.

I've met him.....he struck me as a fine young man. Put some distance between himself and others who were out on the town when there was a bit of trouble.

Just the opposite of a 'roughhead'.

Hard and skilful, I'd love to see him on the ball with the Sainters.

I think he'd cost us too much, i.e. pick 9 + Gilbert

Would have thought that Melbourne would want more than a second rounder. Joey is pretty important to the team i would have thought we'd be reluctant to trade him?

We already lack midfielders....and in particular pacey mids such as Joey.

Joey really stepped up in 2007 to become a consistently good player for us.......so swapping him for another mid would be pointless......unless it wasa straight swap for Judd....but even then you would have to consider the destructive consequences of swapping a core player.

Montagna was our 3rd best player in 2007.

It's like robbing Pete to pay Paul ... you lose a hard-running, ball-winning midfielder - for another hard-running, ball-winning midfielder ... and a draft pick!

We lack midfielders most ... although if you believe some fool of a journo in the HS this morning, our priority are key forwards to replace Gehrig.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

i agree that joey is important and should not be traded, i just prefer that posters add some substance to their posts when claiming something. just saying "cant get rid of joey" without justification of why he should not be traded annoys me..

he will be crucial to our midfiels in the future which will look very promising with dal, a fully fit lenny, a fully fit ball, harvs (to an extent, where expectation should be low) and of course dal.

Maybe we could trade McQualter for Daniel Bell as well and Rix for White?

I think Melbourne would be mad not to jump at our 6th round pick coupled with Gwilt in exchange for pick 3, Brock and Sylvia.

Everyone is wetting their dacks over our pick 9, and funnily it hasn't been raised in this thread to used to get Brock McLean.

Why?

He was pick 5 in the 2003 draft.

His form in 05 and 06 had been outstanding. Remember he was tuouted as being Melbourne's skipper until he broke his foot against us in R1.

For good reason.

Tough, runs in straight lines, kicks goals, runs hard and gets plenty of the ball. He plays an on-baller style game of a mature, hard bodied, hard nosed veteran - yet is only 21!

But I get the feeling people wouldn't trade our precious pick 9 for a pick 5 that's still only 21 and has been in the system for 4 years??

Amazing.

Your dead on the money here Rodger.

McLean is simply devastating on his day - one of the hardest, toughest and courageous players in the competition and as well as that looks very polished (at times) with his disposal when running with it. Pick 9 isn't enough for McLean.

Rodger, I don't often agree with your sentiments but on this one, IMHO, you are 100% spot on. If that trade came up I wouldn't waste a nanosecond in deciding to accept it.

The only problem I can see is that Melbourne would have to be nuts to even contemplate it.
