DEMETRIOU READY TO QUIT TOP JOB

Post: # 467889Post Stephen Theodore »

Demetriou ready to quit top job
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
The AFL season is over - and league boss Andrew Demetriou is ready to call it quits. By Adam Shand.
Andrew Demetriou has told AFL commissioners he is ready to move on after a successful four-year stint as the code's chief executive. He has often spoken about retreating to anonymity and would like his children to spend more time in Italy, where he owns a house at Lake Como.

Football sources say the search has begun for a new CEO, although Demetriou has indicated there is no need to rush the recruitment process. "This may have not even been his last grand final - he wants to be part of the process and ensure the right person is appointed," a source said this week.

One source said Jeff Browne, a Nine Network senior executive with close ties to the AFL, was sounded out about the top job, but remains committed to rebuilding Nine in the years ahead.

Potential contenders could include AFL senior executive Gillon McLachlan, Geelong chief executive Brian Cook and Essendon boss Peter Jackson. WA Football Commission chairman Neale Fong is also rated highly in the AFL. One source predicted the AFL would be more likely to look "outside the football structure".

Demetriou, 46, who was appointed CEO in September 2003, has overseen an increase in crowds and revenues. Insiders say his force of personality impressed the late Kerry Packer and was a key reason Nine was prepared to bid a record $780m for the AFL rights, an offer matched by the Seven-Ten consortium.

Friends of Demetriou, a former schoolteacher who played more than 100 games with North Melbourne and Hawthorn, say he has often joked about doing five years as AFL boss and then retiring to Lake Como.

But media identity Red Symons, a close friend, told The Bulletin last year he doubted Demetriou would simply choose a quieter life. "There's nothing bigger in Australia for him to do. I reckon he'll be the next to say, 'These have been the best Olympics ever'."

Haha the AFL are very likely to appoint another "pharkcwit stooge" ... your correct there, but I'm pretty sure Anderson is needed in his role because of his degree in Law & Media communications? So if the AFL were to appoint Anderson as CEO, they would need to find a suitable replacement with suitable experience in a large organisation

Eddie McGuire to be the new CEO of the AFL.

I heard it from a reliable sauce.

Has now become a business role more than anything.

A CEO with a good track record at a successful company, rather than an ex-footballer who has played/coached at the highest level.

Your Brian Cook/Brian Waldron types are the go - people with business experience first and a track record in sports administration ... football knowledge comes second.

With due respect Davo027, IMO Kevin Sheedy wouldn't have a clue.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Demetriou was Managing Director and CEO of the Ruthinium Group, which he took from a small company to a worlwide exporter of acrylic teeth ... they employ a few hundred people now and export to about 70 countries.

He was also a director of Baxter Group, which grew from a relatively small business to a $250m organisation which was sold last year ... they specialise in rubbish removal.

Good luck? I don't know. But he has the business track record, including at the AFL.
