collingwood and list management

Post: # 466540Post Solar »

Could we do a collingwood next year and debut (or promote) lots of youngsters.

The likes of geary, eddy, howard, allen, armo and perhaps a couple of this upcoming draft could all get early chances to perform. This is on top of the likes of brooks, watts and mcqualter thrown chances that they have lacked in the past 2-3 years.

We could have a breath of fresh air go through the team and some young excitement again.

I don't think next year is the best time to do it. We have a good list, and with a bit of luck with injuries, we can make the grand final without resorting to throwing all of the kids into the deep end.

the pies were a kick away from a grand final against the best team of all time (according to some ;) )

unless we trade for 3-5 senior players there will be team openings in 2008 for youngsters to grab

True, but even so, I'd prefer to see guys that are consistent at VFL level (Ferguson, Watts etc) rather than your Van Rheenan's and other guys struggling to get a game for the Scorps 2nd's.

Unfortunately, our young guys just don't seem to have the sort of natural talent that Collingwood's young guys do. Pendelbury, Thomas etc are leagues ahead of Jones, Allen and so on.

Uhhh Thomas and Pendlebury were picks 2 and 5 in the national draft ... the equivalent of our Ball and X Clarke.

Allen was taken pick 59 and Jones pick 9 as a mature age rookie - rough equivalents of Collingwood's Iacobucci and Wellingham.

No comparison.

Hey hey settle, you just quoted someone else with my name

plus I was more looking at the likes of goldie and harry O as young players who were given a real backing to go out there and develop inside the senior team

ahh Goldsack was taken after Jarryd Allen... got game time, development was fantastic.

Playing the kids will have an impact... the Under 18 comp is a very very good developmental ground for kids. No longer do young players have to spend a few years in the reserves before they get their chance.

IMO Armitage & Allen need to get consistent games next year... Geary, Eddy if they are promoted as well.

The only way to bring the kids on is to play them

There is a BIG difference between the pies and us.

1. They have an elite training facility, and we don't.

2. But the most improtant factor is the effort they put into each new player that comes into their club. They work hard to maximize the improvement of their players. They identify their weaknesses & work on minizing them, while building on their strenghts.

They, like the eagles (and a few other clubs) are able to get the best out of their raw talent and accelerate their development.

Compare the development of brookes, mcqualter, the clarkes, gwilt, sweeney, and other natrually talented players on our list and how slowly they have come along (if not gone backwards). Yes, some have had injuries, but we don't yet have the professionalism and resources that these clubs apply to developing talent.

So don't expect our young players to develop as quickly or as far as the pies' players and other similar clubs......Especially when you take into account how our Footy deptment has been run over the last 5 years.

Uncle of a young Pies player (no longer - only 26 games)... told me... the kid had been diagnosed with OP - he told MM he needed rest... MM demanded the kid go on the rugged training camp or be sacked... kid went on the camp... terrible pain, never recovered, now retired. MM is a dirty word in that ex players family.
yes but all is well according to kaos Board Election spin cause while they were flogging this kid...they threw money at the footy dept.

Our foot dept was in Johannsaburgh becoming "well rounded salvation army workers in waiting"

Farkon droll.

I have no doubt that if Jarryd Allen had not been injured early int he season, he'd have played numerous games of senior footy by ROund 22

come on get real if a player wants a spot hes gotta earn it not just get given a game because hes young

and who would make way for the youngsters ? harvey ? ball? dal santo ?
im all for getting the youth into the team but they have to earn it first
" sorry Blake even though you train the house down and are a consistant performer we are going to play the bloke who can bearly get a kick in the ressys for you cause hes young "

I think Watts, Allen, Armitage and Jones should all be given a fair opportunity to crack the team, we need to blood some youth albeit not all at once but they will develop quicker in the ones then the ressies.
Would rather players above be given chance over guys like Brooks, mini, gwilt, Ferguson etc who have all had a fair amount of time to show something but have delivered very little.

Indeed....THIS is the are where we really need to lift our game.

Many just focus on player fitness and cinditioning as being the ONLY aspect we need to improve......whreas for example as you say player development of new recruits is an area that we need to really lift our game in.

Apart from Thomas and Pendlebury pick 2&5 respectivally and Cloke and H Shaw father sons what other players have shown such remarkable development.

Egan first round
Cole first round
Roach first round
Morrison first round
Shacklton first pick
Bo Nixon first round

Not that wonderful a record I would say. The fact we have have posters on here that piss and moan that Raymond and Sweeney at picks 60+ havent worked out really shytes me.
