Steve Johnson almost a Saint?

Post: # 465769Post hellorocky »

From banishment to All-Australian glory
Steve’s year like no other
By NIALL SEEWANG

IT’S been an amazing journey for the Wangaratta parents of Geelong star Steve Johnson.

During the past six years, Terry and Jenny Johnson have seen their son live his dream of getting drafted and become one of the most dangerous forwards in the AFL....................................................

It could have been a completely different story in the 2001 draft.

Geelong took the former Murray Bushranger but the reasons St Kilda passed up on him are less well known.

“I’ll always remember when he went to Geelong, (St Kilda President) Rod Butters called me and said the Saints didn’t draft him because they thought he couldn’t run,â€

I think the story was Geelong wanted Goose but didn't think anyone else did and were going to take him the pick after we got him.

I'd take Gooses straight line runs and long clumsy long bomb out of the backline any day to Johnsons football smarts.

Err..

this bit I thought was interesting given the current climate of 'we haven't spent enough on recruiting' was the reply from Mr Johnson -

[quote]“But I told Rod that he hadn’t done his research because Steve can really run — he’d always been a fantastic long-distance runner and got as high as 15.8 on the beep test when he was only about 15.â€

I think you will find that with our new recruiting manager that a more rigourous scientic approach will be taken.....of which "football" ability is a factor rather than pretty much the only factor.

Bevo was very much drriven by football talent....but this also meant that our recruiting process was hit and miss........and also in part explains why overall we have a slow list....and too many players who have been loose cannons.

Who are we considering as loose cannons?
More of a loose cannon that S Johnson?
I thought this was one area we had got spot on, all good boys we have recruited in the last 5 years or so I thought?

Maybe this year?

Funny that it seems to have been El Presidente making the running in the recruiting process rather than that all-powerful dictator Mr Thomas.

It's also hard to believe that - whatever the recruiting budget - the club wouldn't have been able to find out about Johnson's long distance running abilities.

But it was probably just an excuse because we had already decided to take Maguire or whoever.

SJ ... water well and truly under the bridge

I am wondering why his father bought it up after all this time ... unless it was just something he said in passing and the journo picked it up and ran with it because he had heard about someone called Rod Butterss in the media lately.

Geelongs revival has an absolute shite load to do with Stevie J

The guy is a f@rkin gun - he is our Hamill - less agressiveness but more skill - just shows how important a gun half foward flanker can be - with regards to being a foil to a CHF - wha twe would give for a SJ at the moment - seriously if we had a fit Hamill over the last 2 years I have no doubt we would have won a ......... - can't say it - it just hurts to much!!!

i think yo'll find that bevo was driven by himself in his own car, to every game he could go and see. he was the lone ranger for recruiting because the board wouldnt fund any assistance for him. and had no help. its not suprising that we didnt know some details about potential draftees.

Why was our president calling to say we didn't pick him?

I don't understand why he would be doing such a thing. And why would you mention the reason you didn't pick him?

Wouldn't you just be calling to say "All the best, I'm sure your son will become quite a player, let's hope he has a great career."

Bizarre. Truly bizarre.

thought the same...also thought that the excuse given was a bit better than the real truth..."we didn't draft your boy, because he is a f-wit.....".....

well he was until the other players sent him to coverntry.....
