carn_sainter wrote:I rarely believe rumors like this and rarely pay them attention...but Goose is an interesting one for me

If we do lose him, we're losing a very important position but not a very special player

In my observation, he has real attitude problems and i really don't like his approach

Probably owing to his injury he relies on trying to get away with breaking the rules

At his peak in 2004 and 2005 he was really good - standing up taking great intercepting marks, reading the play and keeping up with his opponent...if we were talking about 2004 matt maguire we're on the verge of losing i'd be shattered

Since it's 2007, i'm not worried about losing Matt Maguire, i'm worried about losing our CHB...there is a difference

Goose is a player who needs to be in a winning or almost dominant team to be a good player...he is largely unaccountable and slack and needs to have the opposition's midfield under the hammer to play well

He is a symptom of success, not a cause

If we had or could get an adequate replacement at CHB for season 2008, i wouldn't mind much

he has some mental aspects of his game which need ironing out straight away

if he can iron them out, he's better than what we could get for him...but i have my doubts that he can

the only way he'll be playing well is if we're on top
You do know that he is 23, don't you?

If Maguire wants to be paid more than the club wanna pay him and/or if maguire doesn't wanna be a saint and we can get a good replacement - meaning CHB - for him, then there is no big deal in losing matt maguire

his value depends on the form of the rest of the team whereas, say, the form of the team can depend on the form of riewoldt

i find it hard to believe that lyon - who has preached nothing but the value of key defenders - would want to underpay him but matt maguire has a lot of question marks over him

he had a long time to improve during 2007 and did not improve...i dont mean didn't get back to his best, that would have been unrealistic, but he basically did not improve at all...

i was unimpressed by goose and see no point in straining ourselves to keep him if we can get a replacement

i dont advocate delisting him, trading him for ben mcglynn or letting him go to the PSD

Maguire is a good quality AFL footballer and we don't want to lose him...but he is not an AFL gun!

If and only If conjecture is correct.

If he wants to go, let's get the best deal available.
Hawthorn have to trade a good quality player to get a good quality player, other than that he is off to Richmond via the PSD.

Straight swap Jordan Lewis for Goose, or Brad Sewell for Goose.

Anything more than that and we are dreaming, anything less and we have caved in.

If he going to walk out make a statement saints.

I think he is.

He had OP, then broke his leg, then cracked his foot.

If he plays at the level he showed during these injuries, then you're right - he's not a gun.

If he plays anywhere near the level he did when he was fit - he is a deadset gun.

Look at guys like Ottens and Lade who had injuries and weren't rated through their recovery periods.

Losing a 23yo CHB with Goose's ability would be a disaster.

ok how many power defenders are as good or better than goose at his best and fit?

glass, james clement, cornes, Croad, scarlett?

maybe a couple more...

Maguire is probably in the top 10 for power defenders, probably closer to top 5.

so he isn't the perfect unit and has flaws in his game, but there aren't that many who could walk in and replace him, and if there were, every club would have a couple like him...

its not like some 17 year old rookie is going to come in and hold down CHB...

Goose would hold down key back in any of the other 15 sides in the comp yet people are willing to trade him for players who cant get a game at Hawthorn. If you look a the ratio of key position players to mid fielders Gooses value has to be two starting 18 players without a doubt.

It really begs the question why the Hawks are chasing Maguire when Croad has been a good player for them since coming back from the Dockers. Is suppose its an age thing, but on this year form Maguire would be lucky to get a game with the Hawks.

Is that a joke? Goose wouldnt get a game at the Hawkes seriously he would walk into every side let alone a side as weak in the air as Hawthorn

You may be.

Others are talking of using Goose as bait. Others have stated he's a plodder who is well and truly expendable.

Can someone tell me - is he back from the holiday that he was reported to be on? If so, is he expected to sign again soon? Is that a realistic thing, or was that a PR stunt by his manager? Does anyone actually know?

Has anybody actually heard/seen Goose or his manager, or his mother/father/brother/sister/cousin.niece.nephew/grandfather/grandmother etc actually say anyhting about not re-signing?

Is this thread and all the others about Goose based purely on speculation?

IMO, it's all speculation. However, his signing in the next couple days (if it were to happen) would end this. I hate all this trade speculation. Goose is currently a Saint until something official happens.

nice photo in you avatar, geez the old fella looks like he's got a tree trunks for legs and arms.

concur, Im predominantly arguing that Goose is going to be hard to replace in our team.

and while he does have flaws, fully fit he is a fine player and folks here are underselling him quite a bit.

i agree. people are overlooking how good goose has been in the past. if we let him go without putting up a fight it will come back to bite us on the a#se in a big way. he's likely to smash us over the next 10 years.

strong enough in the air to play chf for us too if we wanted roo to play ff and ruck kosi.

Let's not forget he (Goose) would be one of our longest kicks...

Yeah but it's not like he is that valuable of a long kick. A lot of them are just long kicks to 50/50 places not to advantage.

All in all it would be a big loos to loose the services of the Goose, When fit and firing he has an important spot on the team. Hopefuly will be there next year

Goose was on radio this morning calling up from Thailand and when asked about playing for the Saints next year he said you can pretty much count on it. Wanted to go away and relax on holidays first and work out the final points of the contract when he's back next week.

Wouldn't get a game before Hunter and Glass at West Coast or Egan and Scarlett at the Cats or Bolton and Barry at the Swans or Bock and Rutten at the Crows for starters.....

So based on 'whispers' St Noodles heard we have had 72 posts and over 2440 views on this thread alone about Goose going to Hawthorn when the only categorical comments made publicly by Goose or anybody else in a position to know was to the contrary?

I cannot wait for Trade Week to start. This place will surely go into 'meltdown' with new rumours being commented on every 5 minutes or so. :)
