I see your point, and to an extent it is true.

However it cannot be denied that we have had worse injuries than anyone over a 4 year period.

What also cannot be denied, is that the last 7 or 8 Grand Finalists have been healthy. No one has succeeded whilst missing several important players.

We had a good draw this year - well, as good as you could hope for for a Melbourne club (except Collingwood).

If you don't think that Geelong, Adelaide, Port, Sydney, West Coast, Freo and Brisbane have a massive advantage by playing real home games, against real away teams, you are delusional.

When we play 'home' games, it's more often than not against teams that play at the ground just as much as we do.

That is a massive advantage.

Even when the clubs mentioned above have been battlers, they've been hard to beat at home.

Melbourne clubs don't get that.

When you consider we missed the finals by 1 game to Adelaide, it is almost the difference. Consider that in 06 Sydney pipped us by % for a top 4 spot, then consider they played 11 games at the SCG, compared to our 'home' games, a couple of which are actually against teams who are tenants of that same ground.

One thing that is for sure, is that it aint going to change. That's the way the AFL is. Like or lump it.

However using the old fashioned theory of 'if you're good enough it doesn't matter' is naive.

In the AFL these days, being good enough takes a backseat to a good draw, and to luck (or good management) with injuries.

As I have posted before, the polarisation between different groups is such that there doesn't seem to be any point in continuing the discussion.

BTW, just out of interest, have a look at this baker's dozen of household names (NOT) of the AFL.

Josh Thewlis
Josh Willoughby
Andrew Ericksen
Tim Schmidt
Mathew Davis
Heath James
David Spriggs
Ryan Brabazon
Mathew Laidlaw
Jesse White
Peter Faulks
Daniel Currie
Daniel O'Keeffe

What have they all got in common? That's right, you guessed it, they were all drafted over the past 5 seasons by a team (the Swans) that has had the following results in that time: PF (2003), SF (2004), Premiership winner (2005), runner up (2006) and EF (2007).

But who cares about how they went? I want heads to roll - coaches, recruitment staff, entire board! Imagine wasting a dozen draft picks on that lot!!!

(Bloody armchair experts.      )

No point about even worrying about home ground advantage. It is never going change because it is impossible to change so that can never be used as an excuse. Injuries are not an excuse either if they can be helped by better management which I think ours could have.

yep it seems most of the trades we did were for players generally under 22 with big tickets who would play 5 to 10 years for st kilda.

I remember troy chaplin being bagged mercilessly on this forum and its quite possible he is going to play in GF...

no use wondering what GT would have/should have done, but it seems that some of kids just aren't being given suitable development.

And some are just not good enough. Hope I am wrong on Watts but is very slow and no development will fix that.

Whether or not people use it as an excuse, it's a massive reason for the results of the AFL over the past decade.
