Former Players on Boards

Post: # 456315Post saintm »

Since this has become a topic of much discussion in the last few days I have been trying to think of past players who have recently been part of Club boards.

As a non-Victorian poster, my knowledge is limited to what you read and hear on television and I have not come up with too many.

Here are my miserly efforts. Can anyone else add to the list??

Stephen Kernahan - Carlton
Adrian Gleeson - Carlton
Ian McMullin - Collingwood
Jason Dunstall - Hawthorn

Special mentions to Mike Fitzpatrick (Head of the AFL Commission) and Gary Pert (CEO of Collingwood).

Glad you raised Kernahan - he, like AT apparently is now, used to be described as a 'stockbroker'.

I would think that most if not all AFL Boards have former players on them.

Travis Paize was a gret success.

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

Wwell you could look at the current Saints Board where Kellet is an ex-player.......and Butters played for the Saints at either u19s, or reserves (I think u19s)

Don't forget Brereton at the Hawks...and whata disaster he was ......

and Don Scott who I don't think ever made it but who wasa huge source of internal turmoil.

aylett of the kangas is probably the most successful ex player who perfrmed well ona Board and various other Ofiicial positions.

Aytlett was good in thes capacties though for qualities well removed from gettinga kick on the football field.

Ian Collins at Carlton.

There are hundreds, probably thousands of ex players that have become board members and in a lot of cases club Presidents.

Nigel Smart went straight from the field to the boardroom at Adelaide. Ken Hunter did the same at Carlton. Glenn Archer rumoured to do the same at Kangaroos.

We have one former player on our board, but there is a sentiment that we could do with more than one.

Robbie Flower and Ron Barrassi have both served but not currently. Flower is now unable due to poor health.
There is a belief that Lyon will serve at some point in the future, especially given his extensive involvement in choosing our coach.

It still needs to be remembered that this is still a footy club and as such there are different whys and wherefores than other businesses.
And as such a former player (with some common sense and intelligence) can be very useful.

But probably its not imperative  !!!

Maybe Burkie can be on your board too, and speificly deal with trades involving St Kilda.
