Rules on Rookies

Post: # 449230Post Carl Mynott »

Just to clarify the AFL rules on Rookies,as stated on afl.com.au

* All clubs can maintain a rookie list of up to six players. Participation at the NAB AFL Rookie Draft is voluntary. A player included on a clubs rookie list cannot play for the club in the AFL except in the Pre-Season competition of if a rookie-listed player is promoted as a long term injury replacement player

* A rookie player must be 18 (and under 23) before December 31 in the year he is drafted. Sydney & Brisbane can include one or more players on their rookie list during the period between the NAB Pre-Season draft and the NAB Rookie Draft provided the player has resided in NSW or the ACT (in the case of Sydney) or Queensland (in the case of Brisbane) for at least three years before his selection. This encourages Sydney & Brisbane to invest in local players who were not selected at either the NAB AFL Draft or the NAB Pre-Season Draft.

* A club can retain a maximum of three players on its rookie list for a second season provided it nominates those players at the time of the compulsory list lodgement.

:P

In addition.

Max and Harvs to Veterans List
Leaves us with 1 Rookie in the draft. Unless we promote or delist more rookies.

on that...if it looks to be a weak draft down the low end and an eddy or wall or even van rheenen would be better than whats availble then who would be the first one to be elevated of the three

from all reports i think Eddy sounds the real deal, seems as though he is more of a true midfielder than Geary

Won't we still take 3 rookies to get the numbers up to 6 (3 in year 1 and 3 in year 2?)?

Having harvs and max on the vets list will allow us to only have 4 rookies.

...well...there is a trick to that.......we included our vets on the general list this year...which allowed us to recruit a full complement of rookies......+

Correct Stinger, but only Harvey was eligible for Veterans listing in 2007.

By putting both of them on the veterans list it will allow us a pretty large salary cap reduction, so we don't feel the squeeze from hamill's contract.

Only if the salaries for Max and Harves for 2008 (lets be positive :) ) are large ones.

IIRC placing someone on the 'veterans list' allows you to discount their salaries by 50% for TPP purposes. If they were on 350-400k each? that would free up 350-400k in our salary cap.

But if they were on 200-250k each it would only free up 200-250k.

Probably of greater significance to us in this area is the retirement of G-Train which would free up 350-500k?

My guess is that this 'GTrain' money is what will be used to re-sign Kosi, Goose etc.

Yep the G train money will be used to sign Kosi, no doubt.

If harves is on less than 350k then he's being underpaid.

So does that mean we could still keep Jones on the rookie list if we wanted to? I thought I'd read somewhere that we can't delist an interstate rookie after one year. It's all so very confusing.
