Does Luke Livingston have a younger brother ?

Post: # 445047Post Enrico_Misso »

Plenty of talk about tanking to secure the #1 pick at the moment.

The mythical belief is that a club will pick up a "superstar" with their first pick, who will lead them into a glorious golden era of silverware.

FACT
There has been 21 drafts.
21 first picks.
Only 2 have won premierships.
And they (Bamfield and Tattoo) were/are far from superstars.

So that is 2 out of 21.
(To be fair the last 7 or 8 picks still have a chance to improve the ratio).

So is it really worth it to alienate fans and corrupt the ideals of giving your best effort in the largely vain quest for this mythical superstar ?

Particularly coming from a club that in 2000 used Pick 4 to draft Luke Livingston - passing over Kerr, Kane Cornes, Shaun Burgoyne, Coughlan to name but four. :D :D :D

Since 2000, the number one draft picks have been

Nick Riewoldt - Superstar
Luke Hodge - Star
Brendon Goddard - Gun
Adam Cooney - Good player
Brett Deledio - Good player
Marc Murphy - Gun
Bryce Gibbs - ???

In a few years time we may well be referring to the likes of Cooney, Deledio, Murphy and Gibbs as superstars. With the quality of the junior competitions and the effort put into recruiting, you are going to get a star player with the number one draft pick 9 times out of 10.

Compare to the number two draft picks

Justin Koschitzke - Gun
Luke Ball - Good player
Daniel Wells - Gun
Andrew Walker - Good player
Jarrad Roughead - Decent player
Dale Thomas - Good player
Scott Gumleton - ???

Carlton currently have a pathetic team. Their senior players aren't good enough to make them competitive so they are getting the best young talent in the country. They probably could have won an extra 2 or 3 games this year if they actually tried to win, but there is no benefit in not making the finals and getting pick 5 instead of picks 1 and 3. Every other club would do the same thing in their situation.

Dale Thomas just a "good player".

Gee, I'd be happy to trade our first round pick for him.

That trick of being an excellent player is good trick though.

I do rate Walker, but Wells is far, far more damaging.

Wells' year has been ruined by injury, but he has still managed to play some very good footy. Even minor knee injuries usually take a fari bit of time to completely get over, but Wells has came back and dominated.

Walker gets a fair bit of the footy and is playing very well for a 21 year old, but he doesn't damage teams enough to ever be a real worry.

I'd trade the house away to get him. Decent player?

He's superb.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
