Baker/Farmer v Riewoldt/Scarlett - similarities, differences

Post: # 437382Post Brewer »

Just a timely reminder of the result of the Riewoldt/Scarlett incident - round 1 2004 @ TD...

Geelong defender Matthew Scarlett was cleared of striking Saint Nick Riewoldt.
The tribunal found there was inconclusive evidence to warrant the charge.
It was found that Scarlett ‘definitely' made contact with Riewoldt's throat, but none of the witnesses was able to specify the force or exact source of the contact.
There was limited video evidence of the exchange between Scarlett and Riewoldt. The investigation before the hearing was conducted by the AFL's investigation officer Rick Lewis.
Scarlett said he had merely pushed Riewoldt in the chest region with his two open hands and stated that it was possible that his hands had slipped up Riewoldt's body.
Riewoldt said he could not elaborate on the force of the contact, other than to say it was ‘like an arm coming around me'. He said he felt contact to the throat.
Tribunal chairman Brian Collis said Riewoldt's limited evidence, the St Kilda doctor's judgement that the player's discomfort was not the result of a ‘severe blow' and the inconclusive video footage meant Scarlett should be given the benefit of the doubt.

The only difference I can see here is the Saints doctor stating that the injury was not the result of a 'severe blow'. If the Anchor's medico opines that a severe blow was involved that might just be enough ammo for the investigators to find against Baker.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.

In the Riewoldt/Scarlett incident, there was video footage that showed Scarlett striking Roo in the throat from behind.

There's no evidence at this time that Baker struck him. For all we know Farmer tripped over his own feet and face-planted into the concrete-like surface at TD.

There's quite a difference between the two incidents.

trust me the dockers are going to get the lawyers out their medicos will claim baker nearly killed him and he was almost pronoced dead until the white unicorn came and woke jeff up from certain death they will drag this out trust me its easier for them to use this as a media story the explaining why they are going to miss the finals and at the same time make us look like the monsters of the AFL

Freo are the nerdy kid in school that would dob on you at the drop of the hat because they are bitter that they are not in your situation
