Typical St.Kilda we recruit him at pick 22 put 5 years of hard yards into him & just as we start to see some reward we trade him out at pick 32 + a fourth round pick 😕

25 in a compromised draft and he was older than the standard draftee.

Not worthless at all,

But would be good to bundle up with a future second for another first rounder?
30 years of data would suggest there is no correlation with picks after 24 in the draft and delayed success. That is to say the historic value of picks 25-58 are discernible.

That would be a fair comment except you have overlooked the 70+ senior games he has played for us. You speak as if the club has given away an untried draftee. A second round draft pick is a good outcome, getting next year's 4th round pick as well - bonus!

Aren't we giving them the 4 rounder & Long for 32 :? Maybe I'm wrong not the first time

No, we’re the losers in that deal. GC rate him enough to offer him an A-list salary.

Until we have an administration that demands success and a playing group that bleeds for the guernsey, St. Kilda will just be a sh*tty football club.

Saints get pick 32 worth 584 points but give up 2023 4th round pick 67 worth 69 points at present.
So 584 - 69 = 515 points that's between pick 35 and 36.
PIck 69 could end up as a throw away so I like moving up the draft order a few places to 32.
But with father-son picks in play it is hard to say where this pick will finish but at least we don't have academy queue jumping disrupting the order until after pick 40.
Saints pick 9 will be pick 10 when Brisbane claims Ashcroft from saints backyard Sandringham.

Ben long gone.

Excellent result. 2nd round pick for a depth utility who wasn't best 22.

Good luck Ben, and here's hoping Libba can do something good with pick 32.

Didn’t Fyfe go as a pick in the 30s? That is only one example off the top of my head. I am keen to find other examples of second round picks becoming champion players.

Yeah, Joey went in the late 30s from memory. Also, Jack at pick 42 and I think James Gwilt may have come via a pick as high as around 70.

Luke Parker. Went at pick 40. AA in 2016 and runner up to Danger in the Brownlow that year

Langwarrin Junior Footy Club and Dandenong Stingrays product. 3 x Best and Fairest and half a dozen times top 5.

That's about right ace, confirmed on Draftguru that St Kilda was paid well above the market rate for Ben Long, yet another smart deal by Gallagher:

https://www.draftguru.com.au/trades/2022-ben-long

I liked Long but he never ever strung together a number of consistent games of above average quality, in fact played by far his best game ever in Round 23, which is not good enough, remains to be seen if he can elevate his performance for the Suns.

Conversely there's every chance the club will pick up a quality youngster at pick 32 that could improve the list.
