Best value recruits

Post: # 1972327Post B.M »

We focus a lot on recruiting mistakes, not choosing Judd, J Riewoldt, Petracca and sure they are club killers

But what about the bargains?

Whether it be trade, DFA or draft choices

Who are the best value players we’ve picked up since 87 - the start of the National Draft

I’ll kick it off with one of the greatest rookie selections in not just Stk history but in the AFL

Steven Baker.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Sam Fisher

Was Pick 55 in 2003

You’d be happy if you took him with pick 1

Dual B&F
All Australian
200 games

Great selection

Steven Baker

Pick 28 1998

Small, not quick, not skilled

But probably pound for pound the toughest player ever to pull on the jumper

Best and Fairest

Dylan Robertson & Tim Membrey as DFA.
They were good players who walked away to come to St Kilda but still cost us nothing.

Schneider & Dempster for #26?
About the only trade we have ever won with the Swans

Membrey - not sure how we got him for nothing

I was spewing we used the selection before Tim on TDL (who is a great bloke btw) and missed out on Tim who was available. He was seen as too undersized for AFL even though he was the dominant forward in the TAC cup.

Roberton - had a couple of outstanding seasons before the incident

Interesting player Wilkie.
Not big, not overly quick, not a great athlete.
You can see why there were questions on his ability to rise to the next level.

But his gifts which are not immediately obvious are elite.
As smart a player as I have seen.
Elite at reading the ball in flight.
Elite at judging when to leave his opponent or defend.
Does everything well with a minimum of fuss and very, very well.

You are shocked when he makes a mistake, turns it over or is beaten in a contest as he is so good and so consistent.

Gun AFL player.

Geary was not only just a Rookie

He was one of the last selections in the Rookie Draft

About 120 people were drafted before Geary

He would be in the top 15 of all of them

Rowan Marshall would sit comfortably as a number 1 pick

Was a rookie selection after being overlooked in 3 drafts

Hard to believe

Sydney have that knack for picking players with perceived deficiencies that end up absolute guns like Luke Parker #40 & Joey Kennedy when he was under valued at Hawthorn.

Gwilt

Pick 63 in 2004

Ended up being a really good player. Played undersized.

Luke Parker

Not sure WTF happened there

He was one of the most dominant juniors ever seen in the MPNFL

Perception was he had little scope for improvement as he was already developed

Rubbish
