It’s official- Dan Butler is blessed

Post: # 1962286Post Saintmike65 »

It’s just amazing that every supporter I speak to cannot understand how Butler is picked week after week.
What does he offer is the often asked questions…6 goals in a dozen games is not satisfactory, doesn’t seem to be much of a goal assist player either…and this pressure thing that Ratten keeps banging on about?
At least Sharman hits the scoreboard every time he plays, plus presents as a leading option.
Surely it’s time for mixing things up in the forward 50.

The logic of judging one player and justifying why he should get selected on the basis of another player not playing well is flawed.

Sharman is only going at 0.8 goals a game in 2022 and becsue he is a one trick pony he probably needs to kick 3 goals minimum per game to justify a spot.

Buttler is well down on form but that doesn't mean you pick a player who is performing far less like Sharman.

The problem with selection at the moment is the cupboard is bare, the choices for AFL capable players is almost zero.

The only player who could "earn" being selected from Sandy's last game is Windy.

I'm sure your'e just doing it to get a rise but 3 games he actually played and 3 goals I reckon the average is more than 0.8.

I’m not picking on Butler but there needs to be selection integrity.
Fact is he hasn’t done much since 2020 when he had a point to prove, even then, when opposing coaches put work into shutting him down in the second half of that season he was pretty much impotent.

Ok 1 goal per game.

I still think he needs to be averaging 3 goals per game to compensate for his significant weaknesses.

Seems unrealistic for a second year player of 10-15 games to consistently kick 3 goals a game.
Not King, Butler, Higgins, Lonie, Membrey, Kent etc have managed it.

Certainly all of Butler, Lonie and Kent were offered opportunities to develop

I recon go your hardest with picking on Buttler he deserves it, but using Buttlers poor performance as justification for selecting another player like Sharman who is barely putting in good performances at VFL is flawed logic.

I actually prefer Jack Hayes but obviously he’s unavailable, so I’ve mentioned Sharman mainly because I think we need another tall target to help take the heat off King.

I couldn't agree more skeptic, it's as un realistic as the over rating of him by a section of the supporters base that relentlessly say he should be in out best 22 when clearly he has serious weaknesses in his game outside of being able to mark and kick. Weaknesses that are a liability at AFL level.

Me suggesting he would need to kick 3 goals minimum per game is an attempt to highlight the point, I'll admit that is some dramatic licence.

Richmond dropped him to the VFL on similar performances to what we're seeing now.

Liability in that every AFL game he has made it on to the field this year we have won?

Pretty funny that you bang on about "serious weaknesses" when you own actual argument is the embodiment of "serious weakness"

Well teams get announced soon so hopefully he gets picked and carves it up on the SCG. Please don't get too upset if he doesn't get selected though.

I agree he is a target, and pretty much doesn't miss. Kicked three rippers at Sandy this week.

That's simply not true.

Outside last week's 22 - Steele, McKenzie, Sharman, Windhager, Highmore, Joyce, Owens, Wood, Lienert, Connolly, Kent and Campbell are all available and capable.

You're kidding aren't you? Three goals a game is 66 for the season. Plus 4 finals is 66 + 12 = 78 goals for the season.

You obviously have no concept of what a 21 year old in his first full season should be able to achieve.

I'll ask you one question. How many players in the last 10 years have kicked 66 goals in the regular home and away season???

St Kilda should never trade with Essendon and Sydney ever again!!!

I actually think he is a victim of Rattens coaching. Ratten puts so much emphasis on forward pressure, that Butler has forgotten how to get to dangerous positions and lost any confidence he had of doing the instinctive things. Consequently he has turned a goal kicking dangerous small forward into another Robert Eddy!

How many times in recent weeks have we seen Butler & Long looking to give it off when they should be kicking it themselves. Having players second guessing themselves that stinks of poor coaching IMO.

Its a trend right throughout the team ATM, we have so many players sadly out of form its scary!

As most know I prefer Sharman to butler at present but I am the first to admit he has flaws. But in order to fix them he needs game time. Plus the kid impacts the scoreboard and provides another option up front where as butler doesn’t. I also think we don’t need Higgins butler and long all in the one teams. Yes long can play back when the other play forward but you get the point. Makes us too small plus butler and long have the similar pressure small forward style. Play Sharman and actually kick him the ball, he’ll kick members the ball as well. In other words stop kicking every ball to king

It wouldn’t surprise me if Butler recaptured some of his 2020 form on Saturday night. Put Higgins back in the team next week, however, and he’ll go back to being a passenger.

The Butler-Higgins small forward combo just doesn’t seem to be effective enough.

Yeah they don't seem to gel well but IMO I prefer Higgins to Butler .I just can't see what Butler has done to keep his spot IMO his form at AFL level in the last 18 months has been very ordinary
