He’s a mile off… long term prospect
Agree we needed to invest in a up & coming ruck man & Max is a good pick up but he is not ready for what's required to compete with the bigger bodied & more experienced blokes ATM IMO
204cm and 94kg. That's pretty big. Its also been mentioned, even at club level, he don't mind throwing that around and is a mentally tough character.
He is also a leaping ruckman in the mould of Ryder, who pursues the ball at ground level like Marshall.
Compared physically to King, he could play next year. Maybe not first ruck, but he could play.
It was mentioned by someone at the club before the break that Max has a lot of work to do on his endurance. Plus you only had to look at him standing next to Campbell, he is like a bean pole in comparison. I dont know where you got the leaping ruck comparision from? That couldnt be further from reality, he can jump but he relied on his physicality at the Under 18 level (more in the Mumford mould). Id be very very surprised if he plays AFL this year!!
Bet you guys would have been against playing big Carl for 2 or 3 years. Seeing he was only 17.
Wow, you only had to go back 60 years to find an exception to the rule.

Fair enough. Looks like he is leaping pretty well in this to me.

There's much more by way of U/18 analysis if you need it. Not quite sure I ever saw Mummy doing that and he appears to be able to do it better than Marshall can. He is 2 inches taller and 10kilos lighter than Mumford and I dont think I like him tackling me.

You might be right but I'm not sure you can be so certain.

Play him down if you like but if King could take his 202/83 frame out on the ground, this kid won't struggle.

He doesn't need to be a midfielder, he could ruck the front half and he won't learn quicker anywhere else. Some ruckman have the drive and ability to do it early, some don't.
I don't see anything in that footage to say he's a leaper a la Ryder.
He is the big dog in those tapouts. Im sure Paddy is giving him plenty of tips and Campbell and Marshall are the right size and flat footed types to practice on.
He is a natural leaper, you either are or you aren't. Play to your strengths, if the other guy is stronger use technique.

Let's wait and see if those 105kg monsters can out jump him in the VFL.

Different planet, different culture back then. I can remember going to the VFA in about 1974, going out on the ground at Waverley to the 3/4 time huddle and seeing players having a 3/4 time smoke

What a f****** ridiculous comment. Who gives a f*** what happened in the VFA 50 years ago. I was talking about the Saints playing a young 17 year old in the first game of the year against a top side who then went on to be BOG in 1963. He gave his much feted opponent a bath.

A chance some on here would oppose these days and deny Heath the same opportunity.

Your continual attempts to put s*** on my post shows you up as a bit of a dill. At least on this occasion. I will still bet on young Heath being given that chance
Chill out. It was no slight on you. The point was that preparation and development were way way way looser when Carl started. They weren’t even pros. Way harder for a young big fella to step in nowadays and have an instant impact. No idea how you managed to interpret that as a personal attack.

I don't buy your crap excuse. If Ditterich was doing a preseason with the Saints now. he would be picked in round one.

Don't presume to give me advice. Your chill out comment is f****** insulting.

I've been following Max Heath's progress for a long time, ever since he was profiled as an "up and coming" junior, and was absolutely delighted when St Kilda picked him up last year. I could be wrong, but I reckon Heath will definitely be blooded in the seniors at some stage in 2022, especially if either Ryder or Marshall get injured.

The comparison by those who have seen him play to Carl Ditterich, raw-boned and prepared to throw his weight around, suggests that he will be ready to accept the challenge whenever the selectors decide to call him up.

The recruiting of Tom Campbell (a bonafide D Grader!)

As ruck cover

Probably suggests Heath has a lot of developing to do yet

Tom Campbell comes across as a mature intelligent person. He has reasonable skills and experience. He may in fact accelerate Max’s development

People have been whining about our development, we shape the list for development and all of a sudden we should hold them back.
That's where the problem lies. Same people probably think Lyon was a genius.

Looking at Sharman in a physical sense last year, most of the experts etting around here would have sworn he was years off.

Sharman isn’t the second coming of Nick Riewoldt you realise?!

He moved alright, snared a few goals but has a lot to do physically and footy wise

Plus, he is 21 and was playing in the SANFL last season… not underage footy like Heath

The kids we have taken on lately are talented, we are getting good at looking in unlikely places.
Lack of exposure in 19/20 is the reason we have Heath. I really hope I'm right but I reckon he will be a beauty of a ruck/midfielder if he can build a tank.

I don’t want to see him for the saints for another 18 months or so

I’m a perfect world Ryder & Marshall have a good run this year with injuries and rest periods and Campbell surpasses expectations in the handful of games he plays when either of those guys are rested or otherwise unavailable

Gives Heath time to develop his body and his skills
Comes in about mid season next year - 204cm, 100kg and keen to get his shot and make his mark

Heath will learn a lot from Ryder. The longer Paddy stays with the Saints, the better Max will be. He will learn plenty, how to beat monsters as well as those who can jump. Campbell is fodder should Paddy or RoMa goes down, Heath is our future investment, Paddy is the key to that investment.
