As we are talking the saints drafting performance….we drafted Matthew Allison at pick 26 in the 2020 draft
195 = 6ft 3 in my language
Drafted as key forward
Noted endurance
Has flown under the radar to date - IMO
Taller players do take longer to develop

Can he…will he make an impact in 2022?
What position is the club looking at playing him?
Another key forward option or possible key defender?

Would be great to have another young tall coming through

Not really tall enough to be KPP & now Sharman showing signs he can play at the required level going to be hard to see where he fits but who knows he might just surprise everyone

I can't believe 195cm is being considered not tall enough to be a Key Position player in the AFL nowdays.
195cm is almost 6'4, it converts as 6.39764 feet.

It's funny how the game evolves, there are midfielders now playing AFL who are around 193cm.
195cm would be tall enough when playing on Sydney's 193cm key backs, as an example.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I thought it was a strange choice for our first selection when he was drafted and sounded like a bit of a reach. But I figured they must have seen something in him . Could be the new Recruiting teams first major bust.

Modern game you need to be tall to play that KPP role unless you are an extraordinary talent like Nick Riewoldt but I don't think Matty is in that bracket just yet

He is definitely tall enough to be a KPP, whether he will be good enough is another question? From what I saw last season he started the season poorly (looked timid), but was starting to improve before the VFL was called off. He was moved to play as a BP or HBF and growing in confidence each week and going for and taking his marks. He is quick and an outstanding kick, but needs to build on his body to bring a contested physical part to his game. ATM he still presents as a tall flanker or wingman, but that may change as he fills out and grows in confidence.

He is very much a wait and see project player, but has the tools to work with. I stand by my past calls that I thought he could have been taken much later in the draft or even as a rookie if he was still available.

If I was to pick an AFL player he is similiar too, it would be Jarrod Brander who was just delisted and moved to GWS. I agree with the comment that Sharman is a long long way ahead of Allison as the 3rd tall option.

I was very unimpressed by Allison

Looked a mile off at VFL level and barely competitive

Hopefully he improves

It’s a strange one...hasn’t been reported in the media as far as I know but apparently he has signed a 2 year extension already to see home through to the end of 2024. Really surprised that they have re-signed him already, you wouldn’t think clubs would be banging on the door to poach him. Hopefully🤞 the club sees something in him 🤷‍♂️

Wow that is a strange one! He is a long term project player, but the club must have seen something we are not privy to? I hope at least that his extension is at base rate payments?

BIg Carl Ditterich was tall.
He was 194cm 6ft 41/2 inch
He had the mobility of a B double.

Len Thompson was taller than the Empire State building.
He was 199cm 6ft 61/2 inch
Carlton ruck Big John Nicholls was 189cm

Darrell Baldock and Ian Stewart were 179cm and Ross Smith 173cm

That indicates how much players have grown in the last 50 years.
Players are now 10cm (4 inches) taller and more mobile at that increased height.

Barely made his presence felt in the VFL this year. Has grown 3cm since arriving at the club. I'm not concerned at this stage, though. In 2020 we thought the same about Leo Connolly, and to some degree Byrnes, and things really got going for them in 2021. With luck, he'll play a lot more game time in the VFL in 2022 after a solid pre-season. I'm keen to see how he develops and I'm hopeful that our recruiters saw the same qualities in him that they saw in Cooper Sharman.

My bad I didn't realise he was that tall . He doesn't play like a 6'5" player IMO

Maybe why Allison is so far off a game. comparison Joyce 194cm 96kg Allison 195cm 79kg so he has not put on a lot of weight in 2020.
Lets hope he does and plays in the KPB or KPF where he has played in Sandringham a few times.

In recent photos he looks to have added a little weight but that tall thin frame is good for endurance. Quite often young guys bulk up, develop strength, then thin down but its not the only way.

Allison may just become a tall outside midfielder/forward.

I think the players bionic needs to be upgraded I thought he was listed as 195cm when he came to the club if he has grown and I don't doubt it he should be listed at 198cm and probably heaver?
I may be wrong with his stat's when he arrived at the saints.

The club said it sees him as a defender. Hopefully the VFL gets a full season so he can get some matches under his belt.

Lever, May and Grimes are all between 193 and 195. If you’re good enough you’re tall enough. He obviously needs to work on his strength and put on some muscle but height won’t be the thing that stops him making it.

The technical football description of the situation is that the ox is slow but the earth is patient*: Tibetan proverb and prophesy about Mathew developing into a great player given time and nurturing (about one more year).

Kill Bill martial arts training sequences have similar messages about perseverance, diligence and being coachable.

*(Often mistakenly attributed to Micky the Malthouse, well known plagiarist)

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't he the player stirring up s*** mid season about the clubs training regime?

He was the playerthat was the target of some unfair interpretation on a podcast he spoke on. It's amazing how half a story can stick in your head.
