Summary/wash up

Post: # 1934509Post saynta »

From the heraldsun.com.au

"ST KILDA

11. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (Glenelg/Marion)

187cm, 71kg, Mid

33. Mitchito Owens (Sandringham/Beaumaris)

190cm, 85kg, Forward

47. Marcus Windhager (Sandringham/Beaumaris)

185cm, 85kg, Midfielder

51. Oscar Adams (Glenelg/Compton)

198cm, 85kg, Defender

All eyes on Nasiah, the nephew of 1993 Brownlow Medallist Gavin Wanganeen, who is suddenly a teammate of Jarryn Geary, who played with his father, Terry Milera, only seven years ago. Forget overlooking Josh Sinn and focus on Wanganeen-Milera, who is the best kick of the draft and simply all class. The Saints believe he is deceptively quick once he steps on to some open grass and they can put him on one wing, Bradley Hill on the other and watch Max King’s eyes light up as he leads towards two classy users. Mitchito Owens has shot up 15cm in the past 18 months and the Saints matched a bid for the powerful and brave midfielder, who is half-Japanese, by giving up picks 48 and 54 for Owens and 59.

Sam Landsberger’s verdict: The Saints targeted class and desperately wanted a key defender following the retirements of Dylan Roberton, Jake Carlisle and James Frawley. Well, Wanganeen brings the class and Oscar Adams – who travelled nearly five hours from Mt Gambier to play footy each week – is a big backman they can work with, a little bit like Mark Blicavs or ex-Saint Justin Koschitzke. For a club that has long been dudded by the father-son rule it was fitting that Owens and Windhager arrived as academy bargains. Some suspected Owens had spiked so strongly that he might sneak into the top 20, where the Saints would’ve lost access to him.

Good summary Saynta.

As usual, time will tell. I have a lot more faith in the new recruiters than the previous losers.

A lot will be hanging on the Oscar Adams choice.

I wonder if the club will recruit another Key Position player in today's Rookie Draft, which starts today at about 3.00pm.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Where does our list stand now? How many more spots do we have?
Perhaps another inspired South Australian pick for a key defender.

The AFL says we have picks 9 and 26 available in the Rookie Draft, who knows if they will use both picks, 1 pick or pass on both.

By my maths we're two players short of a full list.

The club will be saving spots for the SSP and or the Mid Season Draft

SSP?
Supplementary Selection Period - Players train with club during summer and then the club can pick them as a SSP selection, Hunter and Wood were SSP selections last year.

SSP = Supplemental Selection Period pre season each year.
If a player has played for an AFL club in the past, or nominated for the draft in the past and went unselected, that player can now choose the club they want to play for (assuming that club wants him) rather than entering the draft lottery. This rule changes the game for how list managers should view the bottom third of their list, with essentially free access to the next best group of players, some who are just waiting for their chance.
These players could be nominated by a club to train with them over the pre-season.

I would like to have Naish train with us in line to try for a ssp spot.
Any other glaring list needs now?
Any other loose players worth grabbing?

Reckon our recruiters will have their eyes on at least one tall defender. Still very thin in that area

I’d add a Sandy membership to that. They’ll have some kids worth watching. Hopefully a few of their games will be televised.

Spot on. And we might finally have a reasonable reserves team for the first time in years and years.
Some of the players from our academy will add badly needed depth and bring competition for spots.
For too long our youth has not developed at Sandringham and when senior players are dropped, their time at the Zebras has been spectacularly brief.

Please let's have a look at Schlensog.
Adams will take a little longer to come through. This guy has at least done a lot of training and playing at senior level.
And with a name like that, it would be sensational if he came good.

As arguably the worst kicking team in the comp, NWM is a welcome addition of class.
Big bodied midfielders are all the rage, and Mitchito will have a great role model in Jack Steele to learn from.
Windhager brings some agility and will be interesting to see what impact the ACL will have on his future development. Comforting to know that Sydney were prepared to call his name as they generally have a good strike rate with their picks.
If Oscar Adams can develop some strength quickly enough he may find himself in the selection frame sooner than we expect helping out Dougal as another tall KPD, leaving Wilkie, Highmore and Battle to fight out the 3rd tall defensive position. It’s most likely a development year for Oscar but the opportunity will be there for the taking.
