Let's hope Paddy has a great 22 and has the leap and desire to go around in 2023 so that we can develop his replacement Max V2 Heath

Also pbly indicative that Billings has taken a reasonable pay cut which all things considered is pbly a big win for us as well.

Amazing news on both accounts.
Let's hope Billings can get his foot right and recapture his early 2021 form.

Yes good news.

JB is a loyal saint. Seems public knowledge that he will be on significantly less than his last contract.
A real professional and sets good standards.

Lets hope his best footy is in front of him because at his best he is a very good player.

Apparently Archie(?) on SEN does not think Billings is a good signing

Keeping Billings at a price reduction is an intriguing outcome in the end however Paddy remaining fit and in form will be more crucial to our mission in 2022. No Paddy = No Saints. Scary really but our mid range midfield can't perform without him as was proven this year.

Forget keeping Billings at a reduced salary that is an irrelevance

The issue with resigning him now is that we have lost a potential trade option

Currently we have picks 9 46 and 64 . Not a lot of depth

We need to be in the game and to do that you need picks

Billings would probably get us a high second round pick and suddenly our draft options look so much more positive

The only player left now who could provide some trade options is Battle

The other reason to not keep Billings is “is he ever going to take the next step”

He effectively plays HFF/ Wing . On the wing he is no Langdon or McGluggage. On the HFF , well seriously this far into his career he should be doing more. Even Robbie Gray heads into the midfield at times

Hard to argue but what did he cost us? If he finally takes the next step then we may have a bargain on our hands but if he stays at he’s consistently average with the occasional great game then it’s value for money

This year we may just have a quiet trade and draft period. Get best available non hbf preferably Kpd which is unlikely and then pick late in the draft, possibly from state leagues again

This is the interesting part of your post TSR...

"The other reason to not keep Billings is “is he ever going to take the next step”

Will the high second draft pick take the next step or even take a step at all?

I think people's biggest problem with Billings is that he's not Bontempelli. Very few are. What he is, is durable, committed and one of our Top dozen players - that is what we know, we don't even know if our first round selection this draft will be that good, let alone a 2nd round pick.

It shows that our players or players we believe we can do without are not particularly wanted by other clubs - this explains why we have no draft picks because we keep using our future picks.

I'm happy he signed, the club is happy so money is mutually agreed & look forward to him playing 200+ games for St Kilda.

The fact that he was a number 3 draft pick is no longer relevant. He is what he is. A top 22 player but in the last 10 rather than the top dozen as you have suggested. Hopefully he is now being paid appropriately which will open up a bit of salary space.

I'd be surprised if he was not in our Top 12 performing & paid players. You think somewhere from 13 to 22.

If Billings is in fact our 17th (median) best player, then I'm surprised we are not a Top 4 team already - that is pure icing on a Premiership cake.

Billings is a top 6 player fully fit

A second round draft pick eh?

If you selected a player of Billings caliber (and that’s if?) would you be happy

Chances are you would get a Ben Long level player, and I’d be filthy with that swap!

Billings is a good player - better to hang on to good players

Draft picks mean FA

Billings have an outstanding year id like to see that.

Been in the system for a number of years now and still waiting to see when he will ever take the next step.

We had our chance to move him on but NO

Marshmellows will always be marshmellows.

Sounds like Billings will be tried more in the guts. Let's have faith in the boy. I have a strange old feeling he may pay us back over the next two years.

My top 13:
Steele
Sinclair
Howard
Wilkie
Jones
Gresham
Crouch
Clark
King
Ryder
Marshall
Higgins
Membrey

Next Tier: Coffield, Ross, Hill, Hannebery, Billings, Butler, Battle, Webster, Highmore, McKenzie, Paton and Byrnes.

So yes, he is probably around 17th best player. He is not that good! In fact that tier of players is not that good! Hopefully he is now paid appropriately and that has freed up salary cap $ because I suspect he has been overpaid in the past.
Our chances of getting into the top 4 this year were killed by the worst draw and the loss of Ryder and Marshall.
I think we will make the final 8 next year and compete for the flag.
