Coaching amnesty

Post: # 1926044Post farquhar »

Hi all, I propose that we have an amnesty on all comments relating to changing coach. If you have teed off before, if you are harbouring grudges or think changes are necessary then let's forgive and forget.

My view is we have a very good coach. One who by any yardstick has outperformed better credentialled successors (Malthouse) at Carlton and the new flavours of the month (Bolton, Teague).

Based on the facts that clubs who have stuck to their coaches have had success and we should do the same.
Look at Hawthorn who stuck with Clarkson after the disappointments they had after the 2008 premiership and Kennett was never keen on him.
Richmond with Hardwick who was on hanging onto his job at end of 2016 and the person who they did get rid of was Choco Williams who is playing a key role at Melbourne.
Geelong with Thompson who after an ordinary 2006 was lucky to keep his job
Melbourne with Goodwin who has endured 2 poor seasons before now and are favourites for the premiership
Port with Hinkley who was lucky to keep his job
Bulldogs with Beveridge after the success of 2016 has finally got th[/list]em where they should be this season.

So let's hold fire on all coaching changes, stick with Ratten and enjoy the ride.

              Is Ratten under threat?

The general sense I’ve gotten here is that most have given him a pass for the season all things considered. He’s contracted to the end of next season too yes?

Barring an unmitigated disaster I imagine he’s pbly got at least 2 years in him though some of his decision making is odd IMO
Already achieved more than AR over 5-6 years

I don’t think anyone has ever suggested replacing Ratten

              No finals next year

Go all in for Clarkson and Ben King - chips on the table and take the risk!!!

No idea how long Ratts will be the Saints coach but it won't be anywhere near the tenure Clarkson had at Hawthorn.

This is StKilda, the coaching axe is always sharp.

              Yep

              Next year crucial for Brett
As a club we can’t afford another 6 years of a Richo type in the wilderness

Then we better manage our list better

Not at one point from 2012-2019 did we have a list that could even contend for the finals!!!

              Three reasons why
              The 2009-10 drafts
              The 2013-14 drafts
The getting rid of good players and replacing them with poor draft choices!

Ross Lyon crippled the clubs future with his want to recruit role players (Polo, , Pattison, Gamble, Smith, Peake, Lovett etc

Chris Pelchen then finished the job with cataclysmic effect. Goddard, McEvoy, Dal Santo…. All farmed off, none wanted to leave

But is it ok to note that CScott & Hinkley have no clothes. Their clubs will work that out soon. Notwithstanding Chris' stylist and his spin excuses.

Except the year we contended for the finals, we’re in the 8 and lost 4/5 or something

What year did we play finals??

              We were close in 2016/2017

But really we had ordinary teams. This is the best list we’ve had since 2012

You said we never had a list that could contend for the finals…
              That’s simply not true

The year Richmond broke their drought we smashed them with about 5 games to go and we’re inside the 8. We then capitulated and lost the majority of our remaining games including a stinker vs the lowly Bombers.

Should have played finals that year

On the other hand, we persisted with top bloke Richo for far too long.

Would hate to see top bloke Ratten coach for six years with one finals appearance.

              In two weeks' time:

Assistant coach Richo and Petracca vs. the Bont and our (very shorlived) Director of Coaching.

Do you reckon another coach would have masterminded a premiership from 2013-2019?

We played finals in 2020 due to a massive overhaul of the list

              Agreed.

Something Richo promised but failed to do over 6 years

Yeah he might not have been a senior coaches bootlace but Richo had to wear the crap that trout was dealing him, that's what the club wanted.

Amateur hour at the Saints, as per usual.

Personally I'd be questioning Ken Hinkley's job right now. Surely a lot at Port are.

Been there nine years. Hasn't got the job done. A truly insipid perfromance tonight.

Maybe a change of style is required?

Looked like he knew it after the game (presser). He's got nothing left and knows it. Koch is not a sentimentalist and won't want to cop the inevitable fall out from that pitiful performance when everything was in their favour - except the Bulldog spirit, some very classy Doggies and a wonderful coach.

Joyce dual premiership coach of a team I would have coached to premierships (even though I was about 18yo at the time)

Failed coach at the Bulldogs and sacked a few years later

Paul Roos delivered a premiership to Sydney after rebuilding the team

              Results at Melbourne were poor

Hinkley did well to squeeze out what he did with their midfield. Finals are won by midfielders and Port had not one winner last night. They rely too heavily on Wines and Boak, whereas the Dogs have 5 or 6 players of similiar quality who can go through the middle.

Top 4 next year or it is a failed year

Either way I would be looking to bring in Clarkson anyway

Ratten a bit too buddy buddy for my liking ..... as a coach

              We need more ruthlessness

              Just my take
