Alabakis delisted

Post: # 1925621Post saynta »

From afl.com.au

"SAINTS EXPECTING DUAL CLUB CHAMPION TO STAY

ST KILDA coach Brett Ratten remains confident unrestricted free agent Seb Ross will remain with the club for next season and beyond.

Ross, 28, has been tabled a two-year offer with a trigger for a third season to stay at Moorabbin while his management has been gauging interest from elsewhere.

The market for inside midfielders to move clubs appears to be lean this year with Adelaide onballer Matt Crouch last week accepting a reduced two-year deal to stay with the Crows.

Ratten said the Saints would likely have an answer in coming days on Ross' future with the club's best and fairest Trevor Barker Award to be staged on Friday.

"(Saints list boss) James Gallahgher is working with Seb's management, but we're pretty confident they'll stay," Ratten told AFL.com.au.

"He's been a great servant, a two-time best and fairest winner and really adds to our group. We'll hear probably in the near future on those calls."

As revealed by AFL.com.au, restricted free agent Jack Billings has a four-year offer in front of him to stay next season.

Luke Dunstan has parted ways with the club on mutual grounds after growing frustrated about life on the edge of senior selection, while Jack Lonie, Paul Hunter and Dean Kent are waiting on formal contract offers.

Ruckman Paddy Ryder will soon sign a one-year deal, while Category B ruckman Sam Alabakis has been delisted. – Mitch Cleary

Came on the recommendation of Skrobalak. Why and how does he influence recruiting?

Writing was on the wall showed very few signs that he could cut it at VFL level not to mention AFL level. Another failed experiment but we gave it a fair crack just didn't work out.

Expected

These project ruckman rarely seem to work out. In fact they’ve all been nothing short of a disaster for us

Best one for us was Holmes

Alabakis though… never looked closer than a thousand miles off the pace

All he had to do was knock the ball out of the centre and get to 10 contests and stick his hands in the air and take 5 marks. It's not that hard if you're 7 ft tall.

Sort of risk we should be taking.
7 footer who basically cost us absolutely nothing.
Extremely low risk with a very low probability of making it, but if he had, he could have been Sandilands.

I'd suggest RoMa is coming along nicely

Was he a big project player though?

I know he was a rookie ruck and a long way off it but he was from a footballing background though wasn’t he?

It’s not as though he was a basket baller who started football a year before he was drafted

I would think that all skinny tall kids rookie drafted are ruck projects.
They would all have ability - but need to grow into a mature AFL body to play well at the highest level.
Many kids show promise at that age but never manage to mature enough to dominate at AFL level.

He was born in NZ where his Father and cousins all played Rugby Union and only took up Aussie Rules when they relocated to Australia. He wasn't drafted until he was 20/21, having been overlooked by every club for 2 years.

What was RoMa's nickname?
The Prospect

I reckon he fits my definition of a 'project player' who is looking mighty impressive.

Sure. Perhaps I need to be clearer in my definition... I meant more about these late football converts a year or two before being drafted. Don’t won’t to recruit any more basketball players or Gaelic players with the hope to convert them

OK
Differing understanding of ‘project’

Says a lot about our previous midfield coach - Alabakis is/always has been a complete spud.

Wasn’t Rowan drafted from North Ballarat VFL at 21yo?

Grew up playing at Portland and played TAC cup?

He’s probably a developing player

Alabakis was more of an experiment

Experiment or project... I’d rather take a punt on a footballer
I’ve seen enough of this now to see it seldom works out and is largely just a code for not wanting to look harder

Was a gamble that didn't pay off. Worth a shot. Might just need to find someone more athletic with the next cat b spot.

Only cost was small money.
As a rookie B he did not clog the list.
At 211cm he was worth the risk.
Super tall rucks (211cm) who can mark around the ground can be dominant like Sandilands.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Alabakis and Cox are/were on a par if Alabakis had the same opportunities standing in front of 1st grade footballers.

But both turned out duds and have been or soon will, be delisted by their respective clubs.

I can’t recall Alabakis dominating a Preliminary Final. By all reports he couldn’t get a kick in the VFL.

I think Cox would make a good cheap backup.

I agree, he got half a dozen games and I don't believe he was disgraced. I wish him well.
