Petracca's achievements as a junior included winning the Larke Medal, the most valuable player at state level, and selection in the All-Australian and TAC Cup Team of the Year sides.
McCartin, as a key forward, wasn't kicking more goals (than Petracca), and McCartin was also a diabetic.
Why take risks with your no. 1 pick?

Freddy the blind pig would have recruited Petracca way ahead of McCartin. There was a big "pick me" neon sign flashing over Petracca that Eshaug couldn't see or completely ignored.

Elshaug had to make the case for McCartin, manufacture it ... he knew better than anyone else.
Splitting packs, and bringing the ball to ground, was more important to Elshaug than kicking goals.

Worst recruiting decision of all time.

McCartin was full forward in the same AA team.

Petracca was the most valuable player at state level ...

How many goals did McCartin kick and what was his average as the key forward, and how did this compare with Petracca's goal kicking?

Petracca had many more strings to his bow and he was the stand out player. That's enough for me.

I wouldn't recruit a full forward as the no. 1 draft pick because he can split packs or bring the ball to the ground.

McCartin kicked 20 goals in 5 games - 4 goal average - in TAC Cup 2014 year

Petracca kicked 18 in 7 games - 2.5 average

Paddy also kicked 5 for Vic Country as a bottom ager against WA

As I remember clubs were split between Paddy & Petracca as to who was worthy as no 1 pick

Some of course will argue it was clear cut .... but it wasnt as both were standouts pre-draft

You could argue that a 2.5 goal average from Petracca would equate to a 7 goal average from a full forward, seeing that Petracca was a playmaker and would do a lot more than just kick goals.

Petracca would be kicking from further out you'd imagine too ... he played as a midfielder in 2014, in the under 18 competition.

Hang on so you mean Paddy wasn't some random kid they grabbed out of Kinglakes Under 17's?

Could also mean a midfielder sneaking forward with no direct opponent.

A 97 kg goal-kicking, bull midfielder vs a 95 kg key position forward ...

Why are you trying to convince yourselves and others it was fair enough!!!

It was poor at the time

It was still poor when Petracca did his ACL

It was poor when Petracca was an inconsistent HF

It was poor when he went into the midfield and started to effect games

It is definitely poor now he’s arguably the best player in the game

BTW
It was three that were seen as top picks
Brayshaw was the blue chip pick but lower ceiling
McCartin was the KPP who could end a power forward
Petracca had X Factor and could end up anything or could be just a flashy HF

With Pick 1 you just go with the best performed player
Petracca

I remember, we were all calling and hoping for Petracca at the time, and most of us were either hugely disappointed or philosophical when we didn't pick Petracca at number 1.

Yes. Then we all put our hopes in McCartin, only to see them slowly dissolve over the next couple of years.

Story of St Kilda.

How many players have we lost to injury over the years. Too many to count actually

Joffaboy was the main one who flip flopped

On the Petracca train until we took McCartin

He cracked it for an hour

Then tried to convince everyone it was a good decision

I think we all wanted it to end up the correct decision but the reality was that
it was a poor decision

This is never going to be put to bed is it.

So long ago but spoken about as if it was yesterday.

Is there a number of times the mistake can be called out that once reached will make anyone feel better or shall we just keep trying to heal the wound by peeling off the scab and rubbing salt in.

Impossible to find closure?

Petracca Good, McCartin Not Good. Idiot decision. Very costly. Ok, I've got it.

I bet Gold Coast are annoyed they didn't take Ben and Max with picks 2 and 3. In the end they may end up with neither. You win some and you lose some in football. It is clear that we stuffed it up with Petracca and probably also the Bont, but you gain nothing from ruminating over these things and self-flagellating every time these players achieve something.

I also put to you that if McCartin hadn't been a disaster would we have taken Max? Maybe not. One of the key reasons we took Max was because we had a massive key forward size hole in our forward line, and because we have Max that may mean we also end up with Ben as well. Would you rather Petracca or Max longer term (not to mention Ben King as well)?

We lost the 1997, 2009 and 2010 GFs--and we didn't take Petracca. We move on as nothing we can do now will change things and just accept we are luckier next time.

They took the appropriate picks at the time

They ended up with Ben at 6 anyway

I I were them I would’ve taken the twin towers though

We took Max because he was the best player available

It was between him and Rozee

We got that one right

Really seems we picked the key forward rather than best talent in Rozee. Your contradicting yourself now.

Yes poor in hindsight after Paddy developed concussion issues

Who knows how would have developed if he didnt

Therein lies the conundrum

Again

From Emma Quayle's article:

"A poll of recruiters by Fairfax Media found an almost even split between those who in St Kilda's shoes would take the big-bodied, ready-to-go, can-do-it-all midfielder Petracca and those who would seize the powerful, strong-marking, genuine key forward McCartin."

Its clear now that we unfortunately made the wrong choice but I can understand why we went McCartin given big brute strong marking forwards dont grow on trees

Anyway it won't matter nowt if Melbourne dont win a Premiership and we probably still wouldnt have a Premiership with Petracca in our side anyway ...... we could be sitting last with no Max King and Petracca nursing a 3rd acl 8-)

Time to get over it and move on to more important things.
Pick 3 Jodie Arnol
Pick 4 Peter Matera

Discuss.

It's a good point about Max. Looks like we got a ripper at 4. GC would be spewing that they didn't take him.

We took the best 'injured' key forward 'not actually' available. Phew! Double phew! Bit early still but no doubt if things go wrong, we will hear about how good Rozee was and how obvious it appeared.

Anyway, we've still got Seb Ross so it's not all bad.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Seb Ross with pick 25 would be a successful pick yeah?!

Max King has more talent than Rozee

Why would you suggest otherwise
