It’s the power rankings, not a mock draft. It actually says he is projected to be drafted between 10-20.
The top 30-odd players (outside of the top 4) this year seem to be all over the place in most predictions. No one is getting a good read on it. We are just gonna have to wait.
The only thing we have got going for ourselves for these NGA kids, is that they didn’t get a bunch of exposure this year, so everyone is just speculating on them. Especially Owens. He came out of nowhere with 2 good games.
Makes you wonder whether we should draft Windhager at 11 ?
At least our recruiters will know him better than any others and should be able to make an informed decision.
I see your thinking, but I don’t agree. I would only take him at 11 if we think he is the best available at that pick.
The other things is the article is referring to Owens at 11, not Windhager. By this articles reasoning, we could grab Windhager outside of the 20 for sure.
Apologies, got Owens and Windhager mixed up. Would be lovely to get both and a pick 11.

When you factor in getting Sharman and Heath in the mid season draft, I think they would be good additions.

St Kilda probably will need 1200 points (matches 1500) to guarantee getting both if they fall in the 20s.
At present picks 49 & 67 only deliver 356 points.
St Kilda needs to find the equivalent of pick 22 for extra 844 points.
That could be all 2022 picks other than the first round.
St Kilda desperately need to sell some unwanted for draft points.

It was strange that we delisted Clavarino. I thought he had shown enough and was improving. Particularly odd given CHB is one of the holes we need to fill.

Would be a draft from the ages if we can snag those two plus our pick 11. We really need this as a club. Would be heartbreaking to see them go in the top 20

I expect Scollop to insult me yet again but I will ask this racist question anyhow.

You have to be blind not to have seen the difference that indigenous players make to footy teams.
They add flair that more heavily coached white fellas do not exhibit.

But there are now kids of South Sudanese background starting to appear.
Kids like Mac Andrew who are so athletic and move so magnificently.
The AFL created NGA zones for clubs.

Now Mac Andrew was obviously in Melbourne's zone.
But how much of Greater Melbourne's South Sudanese community is in St Kilda's NGA zone ?

The changes to NGA drafting for 2022 onwards will reduce any advantage.
NGA matching down to pick 40 will be outlawed.
But some clubs may be advantaged beyond that by kids of South Sudanese heritage.

Twomeys latest has Owens at 30 Windhager at 29

We could get 3 top 30 draft picks this year with one pick before 60

'A change to AFL rules on Academy prospects has opened the door for a rival club to snatch a gun midfielder from St Kilda’s grasp on draft night. Will they ‘play nice’?
Jon Ralph

St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy midfielder Mitch Owens has surged up the draft order to set up a nerve-racking draft night for the Saints, who could lose him to a rival side.

Sandringham Dragons midfielder Owens is available to St Kilda as an NGA prospect only if he falls outside of the protected top 20 selections in the national draft.

But rivals are considering taking him in the late teens given his emerging midfield game because they believe he has a huge upside curtailed by two NAB League seasons impacted by Covid.

As a 191cm midfielder who was just exploding in the back half of the season before the NAB league was shut down, he would perfectly complement the Saints midfield.

St Kilda has picks 9, 62, 66, 67 and 85, so matching a bid for him in the early 20s would be a steal given the Saints could use those late picks to compile the required draft points.

The Saints have made it their focus to restock their side with early draft selections this year and have a second NGA player who is a likely top-40 pick in former basketballer Marcus Windhager.

But the Saints would complete a brilliant draft haul if they could take a player with pick 9, select Owens in the 20s then also use a later draft pick for Windhager.

Windhager is an exciting 183cm midfielder who is coming off a junior knee reconstruction and now has a back injury that will keep him out for the foreseeable future.

Owens is linked to the Saints as a Next Generation Academy player because his mother is Japanese, with the young midfielder christened as Mitchito but generally going by the first name Mitch.

One rival recruiter with a pick in the teens said on Tuesday clubs were considering Owens as a possible pick in the late teens given he was showing huge signs of improvement just as the NAB season was shut down.

Sandringham talent manager Mark Wheeler said Covid had given Owens the time to erase his weaknesses.

“He was in our program as a 16-year-old and was a bit of a tease. He would play for a quarter and people would go, ‘Wow’ and then for the next three quarters you wouldn’t see him,” he said

“He always had the talent but not the work rate and Covid allowed him to train with Jacob Edwards and his older brother Kai, who is at Frankston, and he also had a 15cm growth spurt. He ends up as a 191cm midfielder who goes from 7-15 possessions to 15-25. He also spent a bit of time in the gym and got really strong.

“He is now a genuine midfielder who can go both ways. His hands above his head are unbelievable and he is brave. He might even be silly brave. He gets crunched but he gets up every time. We have heard rumours he is in those picks before 20, but it just depends if recruiters want to play nice or if they don’t want to play nice.”

Recruiters believe St Kilda’s other two NGA picks are rookie selections at best in Jack Peris, the son of Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris, and Angus McLennan, who is recovering from AC joint surgery."

You don't have enough points.
It would cost all three late picks with points attached plus 2022 second rounder and maybe 2002 third rounder impacted.

But I am hoping we get pick 11 then Owens and Windhager no matter the cost.

I think the cost matters.
They both show potential but neither have shown much consistency. To play AFL you need to perform well every week.
I would like them both but only if they are both later than 35.

If we think this is likely it may be worth splitting our first draft pick for multiple inside the top 20.

Every draft pick we use inside the 10 to 20 range is one less chance of losing these guys.

Why did we stay in the draft, just in case Peris got nominated but when he didn’t we didn’t bother picking him up.

Does that mean we get first dibs on him in the rookie draft?

We can now pre select the 2 NGA players as category B rookies now, before the rookie draft starts.
