do we have a speed coach?

Post: # 1909719Post 6621104 »

quickness for some is natural- for others it takes specific training over a number of years. Some of our guys with talent do not have natural speed - Clark, Coffield, Battle and even Max King (maybe quick over distance but struggles to get clear over 20 metres). The NFL puts a lot of emphasis on the 40 metre sprint time , I guess for obvious reasons, but they all employ coaches whose job is to get those times down. What are we doing?

I think we have a few supporters on Speed - does that count

Speed is overrated. Good decision making and skills are more important.

I don't think it will ever be overrated when it's the difference between two players with comparable skills.

You are correct though that players who can make good decisions and execute with ball in hand will cut up the quickest player.

Quick hands and quick feet - with GOOD decisions will absolutely make a slow team look good - when they have the ball - it is also work when we do not have the ball that makes us look slow and uninterested.

I feel that we have the makings of a great 80's team - you know the ones where you play on your man - you are responsible for that man and you win your position - we have the backs and forwards to beat most oppositions - it is the team press we fall down on and get carved up when we lose possession.

Gary Jnr wasn’t that quick

Sam Mitchell definitely wasn’t

You need a balance.

Sometime quick players don’t use their speed, some can’t find the ball.

There’s speed/power over 5mtrs like Judd, Ablett, Gresham
Then there’s speed 20-40m like B.Hill and Zak Jones

I think it was alleged that West Coast had a speed coach.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

weird comments from some- the question was, if coaching can help players to get quicker and thus help make talented players (read those with skill and decision making) that are slow also quicker, do we have this available? If you think it does not matter- then look at the Bont or even Oliver and Petracca as they blast out of the centre square surrounded by opponents.

If the Bont, Oliver and Petracca "blast" from the centre, it is not speed but strength combined with excellent skills.

Fair enough, but in that case can you even teach ‘speed’? Maybe you could help someone become a fraction of a second quicker over some distance, but I doubt it would mean much.

Rather spend that time and effort on teaching players to make better decisions and hit targets, or even kick straight!

If you could teach speed, many of us would have been quicker than we were!

You can teach running technique, but in a competitive game of footy with a ball and opposition to worry about, that goes out the window.

Fact is, people are genetically made up with a certain proportion of fast twitch fibres compared to slow twitch.

I think you can teach speed, you can get someone to run faster. The trick in AFL is teaching them how to find the ball & where to run PLUS what & how to do with the pill afterwards.

Rath keeps saying we dont have a fitness issue (data says so), yet players cant run out games? He blames 'effort', common sense dictates that if the players cant lift late in games that's because they are spent. Either the game plan stinks and is unworkable (again Raths baby) or the team are unfit. Because they arent playing well and hitting targets, Rath suggests they have to work harder and are not running to create leads or space. IMO it all starts and ends with fitness, they are unfit and he is papering over the cracks to cover his arse!

So does the club need a running coach? Absolutely IMO much more than they need a boffin like Rath quoting data statistics!
