That's what I thought too. I blinked and then looked for the date on the article.

I hope he can improve his goalkicking over the next 4 years.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Two observations came to mind when I read this news:

1. One of the day game commentators said the other day that Max King is tracking Geelong's Tom Hawkins in terms of his stats in years 1 and 2, which is a very encouraging sign, and

2. At the end of his new contract (2026) he is likely to follow former St Kilda gun full-forwards, Plugger Lockett and Big Bad Barry Hall to the Sydney Swans to really turn it on!!

No. He is a life long saints supporter and by then McCartin will be well entrenched as the swans focal point in attack.

I would be disappointed if he turned out to be the same level as Hawkins, who is a B-Grader made to look good by being in a dominant team with star after star in the midfield.

I think I'd settle for a Hawkins level Full forward

I think that would be a downgrade on his potential.

I think Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood are more accurate comparisons

Hawkins is a ‘bear in the square’ FF who bases his game around strength. Of course when you start playing against men early doors and strength is your 1 Wood you are going to take some time.

King is athletic and more of a mobile athlete (even though for some reason we are playing him as a gorilla)

I think King needs to be more assertive, even aggressive with his body language and attack on the footy. He looks timid sometimes.

His brother leads a lot more to receive the ball, and is more aggressive

Don't get me wrong, the comparison with Tom Hawkins was purely about stats on the board, no suggestion it implied that King played in the same style as Hawkins - physically they are not at all alike!

The whole point about the comparison of stats is that Max King is making good progress and we need not lament his current performance or question his potential as some have on this forum recently....

The good news we so need. He might be a future captain as might Byrnes. If Billings signs up again then that's a flicker of flame to the recovery fire. Max's bro must be thinking coming to the Saints the way Suns are tracking.
Paton Howard Wilkie
Highmore Battle Coffield
Sinclair Crouch Connelly
Billings Ben King Membrey
Higgins Max King Byrnes

Marshall Steele Gresham

int: Heath Ross Sharman Clark

Emg: Clavarino, Joyce, Dunstan, First pick 2021

is a side I think could win a flag or at least seriously contend.

With the continuing failure of GC we should be able to lure Ben out of GC surely.

He should just say he is homesick and wants out of that shithole!

I think our only way forward is to have a TWIN TOWER front half which would give us a point of difference

2 x 200+cm forwards with speed and agility

A 188cm medium forward who is mobile with strong hands

A 192cm forward with a huge aerobic tank

Higgins and Butler with a bit of Gresham in the mix!

Ominous Max signs for 4 and Ben has let GC know he will hold off signing until next year.

Will be a great day when we see the boys line up together.
Maybe rnd1 2022..??

Now get Rath & Roughead out of his ear and let him work with Matt Lloyd on establishing a decent goal kicking routine!

Ben King has kicked 76-45 from 45 games
121 shots (2.7pg) at 62%
7.7ppg
3.7 marks
1.0 contested
0.7 tackles

Max King has kicked 38-42 from 30 games
80 shots (2.7pg) at 48%
8.4 ppg
3.7marks
1.8 contested marks
1.1 tackles

Interesting, there are some similarities, but a few differences also.

I agree that a fresh voice or one clear voice that he trusts and relates to. Lloyd maybe that voice. Just remember that Max's goalkicking accuracy had a knock on it as a junior when he was under Lloyd's tutelage.

He needs to deal with the spotlight, the moment, the heat of the AFL. That is more than kicking mechanics but a trusted, set routine will help.
