Like the Government don't bring in external experts as they may show what you have been doing is wrong/doesn't work .

Ultimately it is the ONLY skill that matters,
which coincides with it being the only skills that is not taken seriously.
Checkside banana from 35m out on a slight angle anyone?

Re: Goal Kicking
These stats should be posted on the notice boards of the clubrooms in BOLD CAPS in order to make everyone, administrators, coaches and players fully aware that they have to give this much greater emphasis because it has cost the team God knows how many games over the years!
I would go so far as to say that it is even more important to have a goal kicking coach ahead of most other specialities.
There's not much point having a winning attack strategy if all the hard work getting the ball into the forwards' hands is frittered away with poor kicking form goal.
The other stat that would be interesting to see is how the team rates in actual scores on the board per number of entries into the forward 50. I reckon in 2021 St Kilda would be in the bottom 4.

Re: Goal Kicking
It's been going on long enough that it's almost laughable now that it hasn't been addressed properly.
On the bright side, it looks like we're in for a good goal kicking year in 2024, not that far away!

Re: Goal Kicking
Yes, but is it for set shots or all shots? Important distinction, though I’m guessing we’re lousy in both

Re: Goal Kicking
I seem to recall Ratts saying last year, that the emphasis had changed.
They wanted to get much closer to goal before taking a shot to increase the chance of success.
Anyone remember this?

Re: Goal Kicking
Game plan was worked out, initially by Geelong, then others cottoned on… just hold your back 6… do not allow easy over the back goals.

Re: Goal Kicking
Sorry for late reply - just back from a day ban for I don’t quite know what for ...maybe someone complained....but anyhoo ..
Not sure tbh if it’s set shot or not but given the consistency I’m not sure it matters...I think the story here is we suck
It’s really amazing ...you see Eagles landing all those beyond 50 goals against Tigers ...incredible accuracy ...and we’ve got amateurs who can’t kick them from the square!!
I’d argue it cost us a GF in 2009 when we were clearly the best side in the comp
But alas....nothing has been done about it and we tell Lloyd not to come cause we don’t want to confuse players...
It’s obvious areas like this you’d expect a club to target for improvement
I also think it’s heavily related to recruiting...if you carry too many players who lack composure and who are poor by foot you get what you deserve ...

Re: Goal Kicking
No worries. The reason I asked about those stats is that you can actually do something about set-shot accuracy. Snap-shots I think are more an innate talent. You have it or you don’t. Milne, for example, had it. Always knew where the goals were.Teflon wrote: ↑Tue 15 Jun 2021 10:47pmSorry for late reply - just back from a day ban for I don’t quite know what for ...maybe someone complained....but anyhoo ..

I agree that Lloyd would have been well worth listening to. He was a great set shot at goal and would have stressed simple fundamentals and a good routine, right down to throwing the grass in the air to test the wind.
There is a lot of technique involved and you can see examples of players who improved markedly - Stewart Loewe for example - just by getting good instruction and acting on it. Composure is definitely part of it, but that and technique are inextricably linked,
Anyway, there is no saving this season, but let’s hope the club is getting competent instruction on technique for players whose job it is to convert opportunities. There’s nothing more disheartening than chances gone begging.
