Press Conf. - Sydney

Post: # 1963419Post Yorkeys »

What take did you get.
Embarrassed atmosphere, press feeling sorry for Bret?
Poor effort down to players' skill errors.
We don't seem to be able to score (D'oh).
No mention of tactics/match ups
Bereft of ideas? Broken spirit?
No mention of record low score.
No mention it means out of the 8.
Changes mentioned: Hill and Paddy back.
No questions re Howard's form but one on Max not getting the ball.
No mention of inept kicking for goal from set shots.

All a bit funerial I thought. Mercifully short. Bret seemed a bit broken - realisation his job is probably gone for 2023?
Would expect the Board to want something more comprehensive as a debrief and a major change of direction. Even if Brett is now a lame duck.

Piss the board off too. The fish rots at the head.

Ratts is at a loss to understand WTAF has happened since the bye.
He's proud of the family-first culture he's helped create.
And the players- his erstwhile kids- have let him down time and time again.
What more can he do?

Nobody knows the answer

Did Ratt's say, beware the grapes of Rath ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Making excuses for King isn't a good start.

Hitching your cart to the return of Paddy Ryder, who's a thousand years old, and Brad Hill, one of the most overpaid players in the comp, isn't a good look.

Talking up Seb Ross, who was workmanlike tonight, is a bit strange.

He was on top of the stats, though.

Look he’s throwing players under bus (rightly so) but he’s forgotten who sets up the plan - he does
Nice bloke , probably my a Neil Balme type that you like to have involved around the club in some way cause people warm to him but he’s not a ruthless senior AFL coach
He’s out of ideas and I’m not sure he commands the players respect

Yeah ...nah

We need a drill sergeant to shout at the players every training session and prematch and at every break (all the Gen Z's and millennials will love that)

This bloke could be free

I just watched it. Really depressing. But so is our team. Pre bye - we were close but in reality, a mile away. Post-bye after playing 2 decent teams of 3 … we’ve been shown to have been swimming without our shorts on all along and the tide has gone out quickly.

We still have terrible skills under pressure & a 34yo ruck and 28 wing is going to fix that? No chance.

In hindsight, the North game was the canary in the coal mine. We should’ve done to them what we did to the Dawks. But no, we let North dominate the first 10 mins of the last q and it’s been pox since then.

Players make coaches. Ratten could be Clarko and Barassi combined with this list and it wouldn’t matter. We just give the ball back incessantly with sh1tty kicking or lazy free kicks.

We've got issues with player leadership, and with player trust and player connection. Most of our guys bomb the footy or kick it without conviction (like...who gives a crap if it doesn't hit you on the chest, at least I got a possession!) We have a few selfish players and there are behaviours that need flushing out. Another crisis meeting required

Geary might not have been the best player on the list but he was a good captain. Steele has yet to prove he can lead this side. His deputies aren't helping

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Stee ... t%20season.

"Ahead of the 2021 AFL season, Steele was named co-captain of St Kilda alongside incumbent skipper Jarryn Geary. The honour was all the more significant as Steele had not been part of the leadership group in 2020, although he began to sit in on meetings in the second half of that season."

There have been too many players- let's say the whole team who have played unmotivated football over the last two games. We are not talking about one or two players out of form, and this falls back on the coach- when a worker in a business slacks off then they get let go, but when the whole workforce slacks off, then management have to be looked at, as it's a culture thing. This mess is firmly in the lap of the football dept.

I think Ratten's first answer/statement about poor kicking/handpassing and poor decision making accurately addressed 80% of the problem.

Doesn't matter what the game plan is, clanger after clanger, and bomb it long to the opposition equals fail.

For the rest ofthe presser he was just trying to keep some composure for himself, the players and the club, buying time until he was off camera and in a place where he could collapse into a miserable heap for a bit, and then to restart the thinking about how to address the form collapse.

Not "Simon Templar". He was here first. Please change my username to Bumstead and if possible make me one of those very large sandwiches, thanks!

He could start by encouraging the group to run and dare. Literally all run has gone out of our game. We are outnumbered at the contest and the reason we kick long down the line is because no one is moving. Gee, people complained about Lyon’s game plan when he coached us. At least he had one

6 to 8 players short of a top 4 side I felt before last night's game.

Crickey I hope it's not more than that.

Our depth drops away sharply at around 10th to 12th on the list.

The results from the first half of the season were misleading. Even some of our better wins against Richmond and Geelong now look misleading, both of those wins came from catching really good sides off guard and by playing only one good quarter.

We were forced to play kids but they had some impact in bursts at a time when some senior players were in career best form.

Windy and maybe Owens look like they can play contested ball.

Too many outside types who don't have the bodies or ticker for playing a style of footy required to be last man standing in the final stages of a grand final such as:

Howard
Billings
NWM
Sharman
Byrnes

Skills for many players seems to have disappeared.

And the club should look at getting eye tests for every player, especially NWM, I'm not sure he sees RW&B jumpers because it seems like nearly every kick of his is deliberately placed -- and beautifully I might add -- straight down the throat of opposition players.

A bit harsh on NWM and the other youngsters. They’ve played half a dozen games Vortex. They’ll keep making mistakes and growing and improving.

What sort of improvement are you going to get from Billings, Ross, Crouch, and Jones

No leadership for the inexperienced players to guide them sadly

Ratten has lost the team. The players aren’t playing for each other, supporters or members. The malaise seems too deeply entrenched to be turned around at short notice, especially with mealy-mouthed platitudes coming from the coach.

i'd love ratten to explain what his gameplan or strategy is ??. Because no one seems to know what it is,not even so called footy experts..early on in the season it was quuck ball movement overlap run kick it long to king one on one .with the smalls crumbing. Thats all gone out the window players either bereft of any confidence or just to lazy to run to create options.one thing is for sure keep playing like this and we can expect the same results.

When he was asked about sinclair's game and he said not having hill playing made it hard.f***** lol r they the only 2 players in our side that can create and use the footy ffs.also said he new thats why sydney bought in clarke to tag sinclair.so they knew but still started him off hb instead of starting your best decsion maker/ball user on ball .
Along with gresham who pretty much played the whole game fwd and barely touched it.got the impression that he didnt give them any chance of winning ,just went totally defensive in his set up from the start.

Out of curiosity, did he explain why Sinclair was playing at half forward? Is it because the Club don't wish to pay a AA bonus?

He contradicts himself.he said the way the ball was being delivered into the fowards that even lockett or dunstall wouldve struggled.so then if thats the case why wouldnt you have sinclair on ball.then .

Yes, I heard that.

He said, Membrey, Sharman, King can’t be blamed. The delivery was atrocious.

He said the defense was decent, or better than last week.

He said we missed Hill.

So what can you conclude?

It is cryptic.

Who is he really talking about?

See the Richmond Geelong game. There were turnovers, kicks to opposition galore. But the pressure was there.

Both St Kilda and Sydney played with energy.

I think I need to watch it again. But I can’t face it.
Can somebody please watch it again?
Or one quarter and report back.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

What a laugh. Our pressure was shyte.missed tackles, head high tackles giving away free kicks.how about being 1st to the ball for a change.and as for our so called forward pressure ,bit hard when ur teamates kick it straight to the opposition.

If the players and the coaches think their intensity and pressure was ok last night they should all sack themselves.
