Looked at trying to do a side but the type of players just don't work so thought for discussion the top 5 indigenous players:

1. Nicky Winmar
2. Gilbert McAdam
3. Robbie Muir
4. Phil Narkle
5. Russell Jeffrey

Honourable mention: Bob Jones, Xavier Clarke

No room for Raph? :-)

With any luck, Gresham will rocket up to number 2 or 3 on that list before too many more seasons go by. I have some hopes for Ben Long too: he looks to me like he has a fair bit of potential.

You will find that X-Man played more games for the Saints than all you have listed except Nicky W. On ability he would be quite high on that list too. And Raph played over 60 games for us, how many that you have did, except Nicky of course/

Correction. Xavier Clarke, 105 games for Saints, 1 for Brisbane. He is only Indigenous player to play over 100 games for us, apart fron Neil Elvis on course.

Gresh belongs to the Yorta Yorta people of the Murray, the same people from which Doug Nicholls and David Wirrpanda and Andrew Walker come. And, for that matter, Jimmy Little, Adam Briggs and the dude who represented Australia at the last Eurovision Song Contest.

Nowadays, there's officially no such thing as a "half-blood" or "quarter-blood" Aborigine: you're an Aborigine or you aren't. If you don't like that, have a word to former Saints player Justice Mordy Bromberg, who made the ruling on Section 18C in the Andrew Bolt case.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/t ... 0e3"XAVIER Clarke knows the mountain in front of him is steep, but he’s relishing the climb.

He realises he is still a long way short even of base camp, but those who know him and have worked with him speak glowingly of qualities he has in abundance.

Clarke, 33, is six months in to his role as an assistant coach and development coach at Richmond, having already built up a handy CV of life experiences and attributes suited to coaching.

He’s loving it, and is learning all the time.

He chose the Tigers over a handful of other AFL clubs who had targeted him late last year. It wasn’t just because of the club’s centre for indigenous youth, the Korin Gamadji Institute, and its links with the Melbourne Indigenous Training School, though that was a bonus.

It had more to do with having the best platform to learn and achieve his long-range dream of becoming a senior coach, though he realises how tough a task it will be.

“I’ve still got a lot to learn and the reality is that there are 18 clubs, which means there are only 18 senior jobs,” Clarke said

Really are you living in 1965

That language is completely unacceptable

The Gresh identifies himself as indigenous and proud and that is all you need to know

To discuss in your terms is insulting and degrading

Very happy with that list. Phil Narkle ( he of the very large helmet ) and Russell Jeffrey both excellent players.

Why did Jeffrey have such a short career? He looked the goods there for a while. Does anybody know the reason?

Gresh's mum is indigenous. Didn't she have something to do with designing today's jumper, or am I dreaming?

Yep, came and went..twice.

played for the saints in 1987/88 and 1990/91. Then left for the bears in 1992 where he played 8 games.

He started off at Geelong where he played in a night match before suffering a pretty serious knee injury.

Between te stint at Geelong and the Saints he played in Darwin and Jerilderie where he went again after 1988. Saints then redrafted him in 1990 before things soured and he was traded to the Brisbane Bears.

Great footballer and he also led the NT side for a number of years.

Ridiculous that Richmond and Bombers get Dreamtime game every year.
Should be played by whichever club has the most indigenous players on their list as at December the prior year.

No mention of Koby Stevens?
and on the trivia front, in the NT the term 'indigenous' is no longer to be used in government speech, documentation and correspondence - 'aboriginal' is the preferred term. This was actually adopted way back in 2009 by NACCHO.
At a members meeting in November 2009 it was resolved that the NACCHO refer to the term Aboriginal in all correspondence, speeches and cease use of the word Indigenous except in an International context.
So be careful in calling out others for outdated terminology, anyone can be guilty of it nowadays.

Yes, that is what I also heard. By far the best guernsey design we've had for the Indigenous Rounds.

You know I always thought that the abnormally large crime rates, unemployment rates and alcoholism rates facing the aboriginal communities and the failure of our government since its inception to take action to try and fix what it caused was unacceptable, but some guy in the internet whosaid something a little bit ignorant is truly unacceptable and where I draw the line

Both facets of your post are unacceptable and should not be tolerated. Surely calling out attitudes like this isn't a bad thing?

How is calling out some major problems unacceptable? Do you think that aboriginals are treated fairly and equally? If they aren't shouldn't we be doing something as Australians? The idea that you think it's unacceptable to have a discussion about something as important as this is wrong, just plain wrong

Furthermore, what people are doing isn't calling out, saintspremier said something that 20 years ago was acceptable, but nowadays isn't, that doesn't make it ok, I want to make that clear, but that comes down to a lack of education about aboriginal culture from a young age that is still not happening today.

Also, as a young person the reactions to his posts are what makes people in my age consider the far and alt-right 'cool' and 'edgy'. The instant reply of 'what the f$&@ is wrong with you' is not how discussion takes place. It's just as easy to say, 'hey, being aboriginal is more than just skin colour'. There not only are you not antagonising people away from your point of view, but your also creating awareness. This way of thinking is what gets Donald trump and Pauline Hanson elected.

Rant over
