Re: Elite A graders.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'd much rather the hype be kept down on our players. Hype leads to big contract requests, the kind we've been too guilty of handing out in the past. We've got a couple of A-graders now. You can figure them out. But no need for us to add to the talk; let them wi...

Re: Saints have the bloodlust

Well said by the OP. Putting a decent team to the sword and never letting go - until the final few minutes - marked an A+ performance. I saw things I haven't seen for a long time, most notably the huge running efforts by nearly all players. We sprinted on nearly every play to make extra options, esp...

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?

They have a remarkable culture, one that is increasingly perpetual, and engrained in the fabric of the club. They're either in contention to win flags or putting maximum development into players capable of winning flags. They're the benchmark for consistency. They put all the framework in place to d...

Re: No more Ben King ….

We still have to chase this guy extremely hard at the end of 2023. As mentioned by others, he'll be on $1m to sit on the couch this year - that's money we don't have (call it Hannebery money). And he'll be on $1m next year to get himself up to speed. Frankly, we'll be in a better position to assess ...

Re: AFL funding totals released

We agreed to take on a shocking deal at the Docklands in order to get the AFL out of a bind there, which virtually bankrupted the club, so the trade off was they agreed to help our bottom line.

Re: Long's form

Staying away from the party life wouldn't hurt. He's certainly loving the life of being an AFL footballer. But he might not be for much longer if he doesn't put his head down and work his backside off. Just doesn't seem to want it. Talented in moments but so patchy and I'm just not sure he's dedicat...

Re: Practice Match Carlton v St.Kilda - Ikon Park, Thursday 24th February, 10:00AM

Are we allowed to be honest yet? Well, I thought we were dead ordinary - irrespective of whether it was a practice game or not. I thought Carlton were quite a bit better, especially in terms of stoppages, skill execution and ball movement from one end to the other. Should have won by more. Not sayin...

Only just saw this Simon. My goodness, thank you so much for all you've done. Almost 20 years have passed since we put faces to the names at Caulfield Racecourse and had John Beverage along to tell us about his recruits - you've been a mainstay ever since, and a humble and gracious contributor. Re: Saints looking to fill Coffields list position

Hoping we go with Leinert. Unlucky to be cut, fringe best 22 at Port, and at 195cm is tall enough to play emergency KPP. Someone at the club has the hots for Naish and keeps putting him forward as an option but until he absolutely dominates VFL, I can't make a case. We don't seem to have any kind of...

Re: Herald Sun St Kilda 2022 preview: Season predictions for the Saints

I reckon we’ll win five and I’d be happy with that It looks like a soft start for the first time in years, we should get a fast break if we make the most of it and hopefully momentum carries us forward. We were 4-1 in 2019 after five rounds and The Age declared us "The story of the season"...

Re: Footy Clubs : Who is more influence, CEO or chairperson?

It all depends on that Club, and the way power is structured. Clubs typically prefer to keep fans in the dark in the way the sausage is made; largely in case things go wrong. It can, and does - Carlton being the best recent example. The board felt the CEO was too closely aligned with the coach and p...

Re: Hannebery turns heads , and more items of interest

We're all on the same page here, IMO. At his best, fit and firing, he's first 22. No questions asked. He's still probably best 22 at whatever his current maximum is, which is 10-15% down on his career peak - arguably a top-10 player. But his career at St Kilda to this point has been abject; there is...

Re: Clavarino delisted (according to Tony74)

He's off to South Adelaide to play in our feeder league. Given we are currently addicted to drafting South Australians, we'll be able to keep an eye on him if he improves. He is still younger than Tom Highmore, who shone in the SANFL as a mature recruit. They posted this nice highlights video of him...

Re: Welcome to the Saints - Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera

Glad to see he's excited our fans on this thread - that's great to see. I'm of the contrarian view regarding who we drafted; WCE traded 12 for Port's 14 + future 2nd and I would have snapped Port's hand off had they offered 14 + future 2nd for our 11. I'm a bit staggered we didn't take it as they mu...

Re: The extent of damage caused by having Elshaugh head of recruitment!

We were also stupid enough to employ a guy like Bains. What a waste of space he was. It was a brutal period of incompetence where the board made a series of extraordinarily poor decisions that filtered into who led the administration, who selected poor football staff and who eventually drafted/sele...

Re: Draft Central Power Rankings

I don't have a dog in this fight yet as the picks from about 6-15 are really up in the air. I'm growing partial ever so slightly to Amiss, who could potentially act as the key component in completing our spine, and give us the flexibility to recruit Ben King and use him as the ultimate CHB. I think ...

Re: Wealthy St Kilda figure Gerry Ryan and former coach Grant Thomas endorse Larry Benge to join Saints board

All I remember was that GT got bums back on seats at Saints games, we started winning strongly, lapsed members and supporters returned, the club regained respect, we returned to finals...that's pretty significant for any sporting club. My concern is the mediocrity and lack of improvement in the clu...

Re: Wealthy St Kilda figure Gerry Ryan and former coach Grant Thomas endorse Larry Benge to join Saints board

Every time we have instability like GT & Ryan are creating it puts the club back years. That period between mid-1999 and mid-2001 was two years of heartbreaking, hopeless footy at a club that was ready to fold over and die. Should we have stuck with stability there? We may not have a club right...

Re: Wealthy St Kilda figure Gerry Ryan and former coach Grant Thomas endorse Larry Benge to join Saints board

I didn’t realise GT was responsible for us leaving Tassie but if he was, I’d wager he thought we were losing too many games there..and we were, weren’t we? GT was interested in St Kilda winning premierships and trying to obtain enough wins in the H&A to compete for top 4. Tasmania also wasn't t...

He is a yes for me. But he fits in the exact category as Battle. Definitely similar in parts to Battle. A bit more gangly, he moves more freely than Battle (who was clearly restricted by injuries and sub-optimal conditioning in 2021) but Battle is a more natural footballer. He's interesting in many...

Yes, i agree. Sydney's Key Defenders are McCartin 193cm, Melican 194 cm and Rampe is 190 cm and they go alright. Stephen May is 193 cm and he is a very good Key Defender. I explained all this before but anyhow - it looks like the coaching staff agrees with going undersized. I really hope our mobili...

My delisted FA priority list. Let's say we take three, which would fit with our likely delistings/draft strategy (Pick 9 + Windhager & Owens). 1. Blake Schlensog - Obviously lots of clubs after him, not sure we can get him but certainly have to try. 2. Jarrod Brander - 195cm U18 All Australian i...

The current Premiership CHB Steven May is 193cm tall. His compatriot Lever is 195cm tall I might humbly suggest that there are a number of 192-195cm KPD around the league who hold down the position well. Conversely there are also a number of 198-200cm KPD around the league who are not great. It see...

It wouldn't surprise me to see them bring in Michael Hartley, a 198 cm, 100kg GOP who could fill a need, just. Strangely, his efforts seem to be a little neater than GOP too. He appears to be the Gorilla handler we need allowing Wilkie/Highmore/Battle to intercept and double team all day. He seems ...
