Re: Match Thread Saints v Port Round 7 2024
Most seem reassigned to a loss Hard to know what an acceptable result would be. Am not loving the fact the Caminati is playing hurt. It’s been suggested Howard plays forward too which makes me feel we’re way too tall. With Byrnes in poor form… feel like we’re a mid down too. Seems like less than 30...

Re: Careers at StK ruined
Anyway, AFL is a sport that produces lots of injuries. Also, the Docklands Stadium was pretty s__t until the mid-2010s, causing lots of soft tissue injuries for players in all the clubs who played there regularly.

Gee Luke Ball’s career sure was ruined. All the way to a premiership medallion.

Re: Team v Port
BM is absolutely correct. 2000-03 was the most comprehensive rebuild by any club in the history of the AFL. All other clubs looked on with envy and many fans complained that we had been given a massively unfair deal in terms of the draft picks we received. Some of the players we recruited in that pe...

Re: AFL exposure for young players
Young players don’t learn anything good from thrashings. I wouldn’t be bringing any more in for the Port game. Perhaps later on

Re: Phillipou Close to Signing
And I must be mad, but I reckon Phillipou is developing ok. IMO he’s shown quite a bit more this season than last. He’s starting to find and seriously play his position at HF. Lots of second rate players can take speccy marks. I don’t care about them. I want to see a player like Phillipou right in t...

Re: Phillipou Close to Signing
I remember when supporters said we should trade another player who was really struggling every week drop him trade him it really annoyed me at the time, but Ross persisted with him and he ended up being ok the player was pick #1 Brendan Goddard so it does take time. Give the kid a chance I know he ...

Re: Charlie Cameron suspended stiff to not get the StKilda tax
The Tribunal appears to have gone out of its way to make things difficult for the AFL. Fair enough, overturn the decision on the basis of Cameron’s record. He has always struck me as being a clean player: goes for the ball, doesn’t snipe. I know the AFL doesn’t seem to want to bring players’ past re...

Re: Team vs Dogs
It seems to me that the sub could be one of Jones or Garcia. I doubt that it would be Butler: having a goal sneak as sub seems pointless to me. If the coach isn't happy with him, then don't pick him at all. I suppose it could also possibly be Sharman, but that also seems to be a bit pointless. Posit...

Re: Could we get a selection surprise this week?
As I’ve said before, thank goodness fans don’t pick the side. Thursday’s game is close to being a must win for us and we have fans calling for the selection of unproven and (from what I’ve seen of them) unexciting first year players. Garcia looked like he might be something in the pre-season practic...

Re: Evolving
The 20th side will come from an AFL State, so either SA or WA, probably SA where the code is being promoted with the Gather Round I doubt a twentieth team would come from SA. The population of WA is now 1.5 times that of SA and pulling further away all the time. I would wager that, now GWS seems to...

Re: Evolving
I reckon Goddard has already had an impact on our midfield. It’s looking quite a bit better than it did last year. We are looking better at the clearances and he’s gotten improvement out of Windhager and Phillipou.

Re: Moving the magnets
I’d like us to keep playing our players in the roles in which we believe they might perform the best. For King that’s FF. For Battle and Howard that’s down back. For Philippou that’s midfield to half-forward, where he went very well against the Bombers and quite well against the Tigers. He was relat...

Re: Evolving
Thank goodness fans don’t select teams. In my recollection, Battle played in the ruck against Mumford (?)when Marshall went 9ff in a game against GWS. He struggled mightily but isn’t anywhere near tall enough. Apparently Garcia is now one of the first picked on the basis of an (admittedly good) game...

Re: Sandy v Giants
29 disposals for Jones is good accumulation of the ball, if nothing else. I realise he's mistake prone, but he surely can't have been all that bad.

Re: In Garcia, Windhager Out Hastie Jones
I though Zac was ok last week Too the game on Was hard at the ball As I already posted on another thread, so did I. He stood his ground and opposing mids thought twice before running in his direction. He indirectly helped us win the clearances. But he certainly made a lot of mistakes. Many fans, es...

Re: AFL StKilda tax sees Green free to play
Sorry, but we all know that certain players are allowed to get away with things that other players get suspended for. No, there is no conspiracy against St Kilda but anyone trying to suggest that the marketable players and teams do net get preferential treatment is living in cloud cuckoo land. If t...

Re: How do we fix the forward line?
As per my suggestion on another thread. I would suggest swapping over Banger and Boris in their roles as assistant coaches. I have enormous faith in Boris's ability to solve the puzzle of how all the forwards should position themselves. I think the answer is probably first to settle on three talls: ...

Re: Ugly football
I agree that the ground was difficult to play on and evened up the teams. I reckon that we'd have won quite comfortably at either Docklands or the MCG. BTW, I think we should give great credit to RTB and his team for making some adjustments after quarter time which brought us back into the match. (T...

Re: Max vs Ben
I don't think the problem is so much Max as it is the whole setup up forward. The forward line has been far from consistent in terms of personnel over the past season and a bit. As a consequence, it has looked quite disorganised for much of the time, especially since Max has come back. Oddly, it pro...

Re: Coaches votes Tiges v Saints
Gee some coaches this year seemed to be totally blinded by their bias. Last week, in a game that was only decided in the last few minutes, Brad Scott would appear to have failed to give a single vote to a Saints player. This week, in a game we actually won, it would appear that Yze gave his first tw...

Re: AFL StKilda tax sees Green free to play
I don’t understand how anyone who believes this sort of garbage can stand to keep on following the game. Try telling a Dockers supporter this week how unfairly the Saints have been treated and see how far it gets you. The AFL is an imperfectly-run game managed by imperfect humans. As an example: if ...

Re: All anxiousness aside
We won the clearances, even though Nankervis is a heaps better tap ruckman than Marshall. Nobody will agree with me, but I thought Jones played a part in that result. He stood his ground in stoppages and made it hard for the Tigers to get the ball out. Yes, he stuffed up in other respects, but he m...

And in a totally unrelated subject, the use of technology in aiding decisions should not be limited when a score is involved. I haven't read anything "official" but did read one report that in the C-F game, one umpire called touched and another umpire called mark - and since he was the &q...

Re: Side vs GWS
If Hastie had done enough to be selected, he needs to start. You can't pick a kid, give him 35 minutes of footy in two weeks and then drop him. I agree, although I think we did it a bit last year to Byrnes and possibly Sharman too. Hill might be touch and go off a six day break and two flights. Sur...
