Re: Brayshaw - leave thread here as it affects the future of footy in general
It was the straw that broke the camel's back, Brayshaw was a ticking timebomb unfortunately. Also, whether you're a 'thug' or not 100% depends on what colour jumper you're wearing  Feel sorry for a top player who has his career cut down like this, as the cumulative effects of many head knocks ...

Re: Training Reports
I've not seen any evidence that Sincs role is going to change much this year. I still think he is best served off half back, and spend Q4 in the middle unless the game is iced. The problem being that our midfield in some games just went missing and Sincs went in there to add some spark, but we took...

Re: Break out smokeys
It takes a contested ball beast to win games off their own boot. Jack Steele has been that for us in the past. Should be able to do it again this year. Add Owens and Pou to that list hopefully this year. Steele will always give 100%. In the final last year, he got lots of possessions, but the GWS m...

Re: Break out smokeys
Teams like Melbourne, Richmond and Collingwood, always seem to have a standout player or maybe two, who get them over the line when things are close. Dusty, Gawn, Petracca, Moore, Daicos come to mind, and Joel Selwood at Geelong a few years back. These guys put in a super-human quarter to turn games...

Re: Jack Bytel training with Collingwood
From what I saw of Jack, he had the skills and could dominate at VFL level, but didn't have a big enough tank at senior level- good for a quarter or two then faded in the games I saw.

Re: Injury update
The book of excuses for the Saints not winning premierships is a big one. At this level, coaches are measured by premierships and if a coach has a team capable of going all the way, yet the team fails at the last hurdle, then generally the coach wears it. Lyon is in the cooda-been group of coaches a...

Re: Injury update
Lyon is the best coach in the AFL? Who thinks that?! He’s won zero premierships in 13 years of coaching which is almost a record Clarkson, Hardwick, McCrae and C Scott would easily be the best 3 coaches in the AFL Arguably Beveridge Longmire and Simpson next having succeeded Hinkley, Lyon and Fagan...

Re: Will Ross Continue to Play the Kids?
I think Lyon was playing younger guys as he had nobody else fit enough to see out games. We saw a lot of potential as a result, but he will not persist too long with anyone who gets beaten in their position- he was brought in at great cost to try and win a flag.

Re: Bet the house on Ross
Interesting article, but I still consider Lyon has had his chances and I'm not keen on trying to re-live the past as Bassat seemed to do by pushing through Lyon's appointment. I hope every Saints coach has success, but I have my doubts about the ultimate prize coming our way under Lyon. If Lyon fai...

Re: Reserves competition
Not sure if the Sandy alliance is good or bad for us. Watching Sandy last season was a bit sad, and I don't think that our promising youngsters or fringe players can improve greatly by playing poor quality football as we see at Sandy. I guess it all comes down to costs, and if we were to run a reser...

Re: Let's talk about Jason Heatley
Heatley was an a good forward whose kicking for goal was incredibly accurate. I remember his defensive game being pretty ordinary, and used to get pushed off the ball in contests pretty easily. Probably could have played more games for us.

Re: Forward Line
The forward half seemed too congested in season 2023, with too many all running to the same position, or the smalls not running hard enough to make space or to gather the loose ball. I think tactically, we didn't do a great job in the forward half and I would want to see some improvement in that are...

Re: Roughead resigns
I think Rough Head took on his role probably for self development, and has now moved on to look for the next opportunity. I hope we don't lose Enright any time soon, though he seems more involved in the whole coaching setup, with his multiple premiership experience, and time spent at a modern succes...

Re: Will Jack Higgins go up a level?
When is is near the ball, or has control, he is very dangerous around goals, but jeez some of the tougher games we had this season, he was just hanging out too far from the contest, or didn't have good second efforts. That can be fixed.

Re: Goals
... There was a level of dysfunction there in movement and maybe forward structure once we had the ball north of centre. It's a tempting thesis isn't it... Between the 17th June and the 6th of August, Max played in five games. We lost four, dismally. And we won one, by 8 points, against a diabolica...

Re: Goals
The forward half this season just looked totally disorganised- lots of talent but all seemed to be playing as individuals and not as a unit...maybe the coaching needs to look at itself in this area. I don't think Butler or Higgins did enough actual crumbling like we expect opportunist small forwards...

Looks to me like Heath is going to have to step up a bit quickly if he is to make it to senior AFL level?

Re: Where to for Dougal Howard and what does our defence look like?
Let's get our midfield right, before we start f****** with the thing that saves our ass the most. The Howard - Van Es transition, doesn't seem as important to me, than making sure we have two solid key defenders before Wilkie gets wasted not being the third. True.. the amount of footy that our mids...

Re: Developing our forward line for a tilt at the premiership...
I'm not sure what I would do with our forward setup- we need to kick more goals basically. I reckon King needs to be at CHF, and be more involved in the play, maybe see Coops on a HFF and Membrey at FF. Higgins and Butler probably need to pull their fingers out in the small forward roles, they playe...

Re: Is Jack Sinclair a ‘First-choice midfielder’?
One of the best HBs in the comp, not a natural midfielder but can add some zip and ball movement if moved there for part of a game.
