So close and yet so far ... we only needed an extra 2-3%.

Two Grand Finals lost at the selection table.

Ross Lyon's idea of team balance is to load up the bottom end with uncoordinated duds to balance out the champions at the top. Seriously, I don't want to hear any more about "role players" whose only role is to "apply pressure" or "crash packs". I also don't want to see...

For the second time in two years we've been defeated in a Grand Final by a team with very few other-club players. And how did our foreign legion stand up when the chips were down? Pretty poorly, actually. Our best across the finals were homegrown: Goddard, Hayes, Riewoldt, Gwilt, Fisher, Gilbert. So...

Ross Lyon is a flawed genius

You could easily argue that Ross Lyon is our second most successful coach ever. He's an exceptional tactician and motivator. His effort in holding the Saints together during this most testing of years, and almost stealing a premiership, deserve enormous credit. But ... it's on days like this that hi...

A lot of tune-changing down at the Pies ... Supposedly the players rejected an MCG training session last week because they wanted to keep everything as normal as possible. Now they're on radio claiming the MCG session was much better than last week because it was closed, and so beneficial to them .....

Four of our last five finals have been absolute nailbiters:

GF Part One.
QF versus Geelong
GF 2009.
Prelim 2009.

Wouldn't it be great to coast to victory for a change?

On the other hand, that sort of experience is priceless. The Pies just can't match it.

Pies trying too hard to look cool

Just as they looked a little too self-conscious in their designer shades during the Grand Final Parade (Jason Blake was the only Saint wearing sunnies), the Pies looked thoroughly ridiculous on the news tonight leaping around at training, grinning, high-five-ing, etc., etc. Clearly they've been inst...

Colling-would. St Kilda will.

A nice comeback if they start that ridiculous soccer-like chant before the game.

Actually, I'm hoping the support level for the Saints (I'm tipping 50-60% on the day) might be a little disorientating for the home-ground Pies, used to nothing less than 70% this year.

The AFL should punish Eddie for failing to fall into line re clash strips by making his team wear their "clash" (virtually indistinguishable from the normal one), leaving the Saints to wear their tradition guernsey as well. If Eddie is as vehemently opposed to clash strips as he claims (an...

It isn't just St Kilda supporters with the flu. Not to be too paranoid, but who would put it part a member or two of a certain vast supporter base to purposely infect surfaces, food, etc.? Joey didn't ask Roo who he voted for. He asked Roo if he was interested in a career in politics. Aaron Sandilands was asked a similar question recently and answered diplomatically, so that viewers had no idea who who supported. Roo's response was potentially divisive and unnecessary. Rather like sna...

Can anyone tell me who Nick Maxwell voted for? Or Sam Mitchell? Or Brad Johnson? Or Cameron Ling? Brett Kirk? Chris Judd? Matthew Pavlich? What about Jonathan Brown? Brent Harvey? Chris Newman? Or the rest of them? There's a good reason we don't know. Smart footballers don't show their political col...

To say someone cannot tell people who they voted for (if they wish) is abhorrent. Of course it is. Who said they couldn't? But is is it wise ? Is it necessary , when it can be easily deflected? Politics is a touchy subject. Personally I'd prefer not to know what my captain thinks of politics or rel...

There's still time for an Essendon/Collingwood/Carlton player to leap half a metre off the ground, take a chest mark, and win the car.

Yeah, WCE lost their first final in 2006, the Swans lost their first in 2005, and Brisbane lost their first (to Collingwood) in 2003. Not forgetting Adelaide getting walloped in their first final in '98.

Doesn't mean a team is out of it. Might even run them into form.

On the contrary, the players seem to thrive on distractions. Galvanises them or something.

It's probably no coincidence that during our winless stretch recently there were no scandals.
